Sport Science Research Facility

The Sport Science facilities in ISTeC offers state-of-the-art laboratories for conducting research in Sport and Exercise Science.

The Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Centre (ISTeC) is a recently established facility situated on Clifton Campus. It offers state-of-the-art laboratories for conducting research in Sport and Exercise Science, as well as a testing ground for students dissertations during their final year and master courses.

Sport Science Laboratories

Sport Research Equipment

Sport Exercise Research Laboratory

Includes exercise testing and assessment equipment. This includes sophisticated cardiovascular monitoring devices, such as research treadmill and breath-by-breath cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) equipment, 3D ultrasound and electrocardiogram (ECG) and Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS, which allow precise measurement and analysis of physiological responses during physical activities. These tools enable final year students and researchers to measure factors like heart rate, continuous blood pressure, cardiac and skeletal muscle research and tissue oxygenation providing valuable insights into the effects of exercise on the body.

Sport Nutrition Research Suite

The Sport Nutrition suite serves as research facility, catering to a range of studies related to aspects of human nutrition and performance optimization. Particularly in the domains of intermittent fasting protocols, breakfast composition, diet supplementation, and investigations into the intriguing realm of the gut microbiome. Equipped with cutting-edge amenities, the suite features not only laboratories and research stations but also a dedicated kitchen area and individual booths designed specifically for conducting cognitive function tests. These innovative spaces allow researchers to explore the effects of different dietary interventions, nutritional strategies, and gut microbiota manipulations on human performance, health, and well-being.

Student Testing in Laboratory

Sport Biochemistry Research Laboratory

Used to perform blood analysis with Pentra chemistry analyser and ELISA blood analysis plate readers. The Pentra is used to measure a variety of analytes such as glucose, cholesterol, HDL, LDL, potassium and lactate.
