More about Charlii
Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?
I’ve always loved geography since my family introduced me to it as a young child. Throughout education my interests have always led me back to studying geography from volcanoes to looking at the geology at cliff faces in my local area. When I was looking at different university courses I saw that NTU had a course which looked at all aspects of geography and modules that directly linked to my favourite aspects within geography that I hadn’t seen at other universities.
What do you enjoy most about your course?
Within my course I love the practical elements. During my time on the course we have travelled to Spain to study the geology and human impacts of the areas. There are also many times where we got into the local area to study different aspects of the areas within Nottinghamshire. This has aided with bonding with course mates and technical skills needed for a future within geography!
How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?
All the modules within the course help within all aspects of geography no matter where your interests lie. The lecturers find ways to make all the lectures engaging and because the course is so small you can always get help when you don’t understand something which is really useful. I have enjoyed Helen's Earth Systems module the most as it includes all the subjects within geography I find the most interesting. I enjoy being in the field doing research and looking at the geology of an area which is what Helen's module is all about!
What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?
The facilities offered on Brackenhurst are really useful. There are multiple locations available for food, social events and academic activities. As a student I often use the refectory for lunch as it is a quick and cheap option for between lectures. I also spend a lot of time in the 24 hour room in the library which has curve screen computers that make GIS work really easy to do as the large screens can hold both the GIS and any information I’m using simultaneously. Alongside this the library has private study rooms available to book which can be used for meetings or having a space in the library for you and other course mates to work together without disturbing the entire library.
What do you think about Brackenhurst Campus? What do you get up to in your spare time?
Brackenhurst is a beautiful campus with so much to do! I enjoy spending time at the animal unit and taking walks around the fields. I don’t get to do these activities a lot but when I do it makes it more special and memorable.
What is your top tip for someone considering studying/ living at Brackenhurst Campus?
As a student who doesn’t live on campus the Nottingham bus service 26 is the best option to travel to and from campus. It is always reliable and is a cheap option to get too and from campus. I would recommend bringing waterproofs, wellies and walking boots to university with you so that you don’t need to buy them when you have all other financial responsibility associated with being a student.
Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?
Overall the standard of education at NTU is really high and they’re willing to help whenever possible if there are any issues. The support team is a great help and no matter what your query is there is someone available to help.
What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has / will help you to achieve that goal?
After the course I would love to continue research in geography. The course is helping me by giving me all the skills I need to continue within the industry including GIS and fieldwork skills that cannot be gained in a classroom.
