More about Sebastian

What made you choose to come to NTU?

The main reason would be the specific course they offered, having done my research on food science degrees around the world this one stood out. With NTU being held in high regard as a university and being situated in a beautiful part of the UK, it was no brainer to apply.

What was your first impression of NTU?

My first impression was a well modernized campus, catering for almost everything a student needs. Coming from a foreign country the help I received from people such as Richie Lee, even before applying and being accepted was miles above than I had received from any other institution I applied to.

What attracted you to the course?

Being a mature student and having a background in the culinary industry, I wanted to expand on the knowledge I received from my culinary arts course. Food science and technology would allow me to do just that, diving deeper in the greater picture of food and the food industry as a whole. The conversations I had with department heads prior to being accepted gave me the confidence to pursue this course as an older more mature student.

What have you enjoyed most?

So far it has been the course work and modules such as food chemistry and product development that have allowed me to really test my creativity in the first year. the practical classes give us hands on experience from the industry itself as well as the many events outside of the lectures with industry professionals themselves.

What is it like studying at the Brackenhurst Campus?

The fact that it is a fully functioning farm on the outskirts of the city makes it a good breakaway spot to enjoy the peace it offers to study outdoors in the warmer months. the views are pretty spectacular, especially during the changing of seasons where the colours are quite contrasting.

Tell us about your background in Rugby and where you got started?

Having grown up in South Africa where rugby is so prominent is where my love for the game started. I spent 11 seasons as a professional rugby player playing around the world before moving over to Nottingham to focus on studying.

How did you get involved in playing Rugby at NTU?

I initially moved over to purely study and focus on that part of my career, but I felt I could offer a lot more to the game, especially with my age and experience I could pass something on to the younger lads. I got in touch with Dave Ross, and he convinced me to come down and join the team.

What have been the best experiences with the team?

Unfortunately, I had injury problems for most of the first season, but it would definitely be my first game for the mighty Trent which was against Northumbria away. The lads were awesome in welcoming me and making me feel welcome.

What support have you had from the NTU Sports team?

The support I received throughout my injury was great, with constant check-ups with the physio or adjusted conditioning plans from the S&C department was what kept me motivated to get back playing.

When you are not studying or playing rugby, what other activities have you been involved in?

With my background being food, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen developing new recipes and trying to upskill myself. During summer I love to get out for a round of golf or a long walk through any of the parks around Nottingham. Nottingham also offers some great sporting teams to go and watch live and events throughout the year.

What have been your favourite places to go in Nottingham?

With Nottingham being surrounded by some lovely parks with my two favourites being Wollaton park and Colwick park. Lace market has some really cool spots to grab some food and drinks, my favourite place at the moment would be Pizzapilgrims.

What do you like most about studying at NTU and why?

The freedom to express yourself throughout your degree and the accessibility to industry professionals and industry events which allows us to build those connections while we are still studying. The support provided by our course leaders is another thing I enjoy about NTU, whether it be conversations in passing or 1 to 1 sit down chats throughout the semesters.
