More about Tom

Why did you choose to study your course at NTU?

I’ve always been interested in animals, habitats, landscapes and how humans interact with them, so I thought this degree would be perfect for setting me up to work in a field that interests me, where I can make a positive impact on fragile and vulnerable ecosystems.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

Pretty much everything! The work can be quite challenging but rewarding. The course has a clear focus on real-world skills and everything ties into what employers will be looking for in a graduate in my preferred fields of ecology and conservation work.

How do you find your modules and what have you most enjoyed studying?

Really interesting and engaging. The Practical Conservation module in year one was a great opportunity to get hands-on experience of what conservation work entails, and created a great environment for team building and getting to know my coursemates a little better.

The Ecological Census Techniques and Principles of Ecology module really enhanced my understanding of what ecology is and what people do in the workplace, and this understanding came in very handy when I spent my summer working for an ecological consultancy after year one.

What do you think about the facilities available on your course and what do you use the most?

The campus is modern and recently refurbished with ecological and sustainable considerations clearly being of high importance. There is an air quality to the main site with places to work, socialise and relax, and a huge, well-maintained country estate to explore if you have some free time.

What is your top tip for someone considering studying/ living at Brackenhurst Campus?

Make the most of the different areas on the campus. It’s a big space with lots to see and do. Try to explore it as much as possible during your first few weeks there. Knowing what’s on your doorstep can help you make decisions on what to do for your coursework and dissertation.

Why would you recommend your course to someone considering studying it?

Very interesting, important and relevant topics. I spent eight years working in a comfortable office job with a big energy supplier and made the difficult decision to leave to study at NTU. Now I’m halfway through my undergraduate course and have no regrets whatsoever.

What are your plans for after the course and how do you feel your course has/ will help you to achieve that goal?

I would like to work as a Consultant Ecologist or Project Ecologist once I graduate. I have already made some good contacts in this field through being introduced by NTU. I was introduced to Tetratech by one of my lecturers, Matt, and secured a paid summer placement with them in the break between years one and two.

My dissertation and other modules also help by giving me a level of autonomy which allows me to tailor my learning and skills towards my chosen sector.

Any additional comments:

I decided from day one that I wouldn’t shy away from speaking up and asking questions in lectures. I’ve found that this type of engagement is encouraged and appreciated by the lecturers and module leaders and has helped to enhance my learning experience and form bonds with the academics. I would encourage others to engage as much as possible in lectures, tutorials etc. It’s a great way to improve your understanding of the course content and can really help to boost your grades as a result.
