Why NTU…

Why did you choose NTU and your course?

As I was already in work, studying part time was really important for me to be able to fulfil my working obligations alongside my studies. A number of other universities provided similar courses part time but primarily with an online delivery – I much preferred the in person learning offered at NTU.

I really valued my discussion with Syed prior to applying – his knowledge of the course and the options available (including the apprenticeship) where a factor in choosing to study here. NTU provides an interesting, high-quality course which was delivered in a way that not only fit around my career but also actively supported my development and growth.

What do you think about the course staff? How do they support your learning and university experience?

The staff have been fantastic through-out – the different teaching environments really complement each other (lectures, seminars and online resources). All of the staff were really engaging and provided relevant up to date content. They were always there to assist when needed which was particularly important for me through my dissertation, when Bahareh’s guidance was invaluable. In instances where other help was required, I was sign posted to other resources, such as the fantastic library staff to help with referencing.

Have you been involved in any live projects of briefs on your course and if so, can you talk a bit about one you really enjoyed?

One project that tends to stick in my mind was the first time I worked with strawbale cassettes, a timber frame wall system with in-fill strawbales. Incorporating this new type of structural system in conjunction with the required steel frame to form an overhanging roof structure and large section of glazing was an interesting challenge.

Does the “real” NTU match what you’d imagined? How does it compare with your friends’ experience at other universities?

It does – great facilities and opportunities. Helpful and knowledgeable staff that make a real effort to improve your experience. On the whole there are a lot of similarities with other universities, but NTU does feel slightly more approachable/friendly.

How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?

A fantastic balance between academia and applicable real-world knowledge.

Outside of the Lecture Theatre…

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

Having separate lectures/presentations that just included apprentices was a really useful opportunity to get to know other people in a similar position. These relationships are something that will remain and grow now we are all in our chosen careers.

The Next Steps…

What’s next for you after NTU?

I’m currently studying MSc Structural Engineering at NTU part time as I work towards becoming a chartered engineer in the coming years.

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

NTU were fantastic in assisting as part of my ICE IEng EPA application. Many of the staff (Primarily Matt Newman) were there to run ideas past and how to prepare appropriate documentation etc. A particular thanks goes to Dr Paul Beetham for being my second sponsor – this was hugely appreciated as coming from a small practice background it was difficult to find another sponsor.

Advice...

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

Visit the campus and try to speak with as many people as possible. This will provide a fantastic opportunity to understand where you’ll be studying and give you the chance to ask any questions you may have.
