Why did you choose NTU and your course?

Choosing Nottingham Trent University (NTU) for my postgraduate studies was a decision driven by both academic ambition and personal growth. NTU’s reputation as a world-leading centre of research, combined with its commitment to delivering high-quality education through industry-experienced faculty, made it an ideal environment to advance my career in structural engineering. Moreover, the library facilities and extensive online resources have also proven to be incredibly convenient and supportive of independent learning. The vibrant international community was another compelling factor. The university fosters a culturally rich and inclusive atmosphere, which I find both inspiring and energising.

I enrolled in the MSc Structural Engineering with Materials programme because it aligned perfectly with my professional aspirations and intellectual curiosity. The course is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM), which assures its academic rigour and relevance to industry standards. What truly stood out to me was the flexibility of the curriculum designed to accommodate diverse lifestyles which allowed me to study part-time while balancing other commitments. In addition, my prior work experience in the field has deepened my respect for the discipline of structural engineering, especially in areas such as structural analysis and superstructural loading assessment. Pursuing this degree at NTU equipped me with the advanced knowledge and practical training necessary to excel in my chosen career path and contribute meaningfully to the built environment.

Tell us about your background and what you studied prior to continuing into postgraduate studies.

Before beginning my postgraduate studies at Nottingham Trent University, I built a strong foundation in civil engineering through both academic training and professional experience. I completed my undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering from Teesside University, where I developed a keen interest in structural design, materials science, and the mechanics behind resilient infrastructure. This academic grounding was complemented by hands-on experience in the field, where I worked on various construction and structural assessment projects that deepened my understanding of real-world engineering challenges.

My professional journey exposed me to the complexities of structural design and analysis, sparking a desire to specialise further. These experiences not only reinforced my passion for the discipline but also highlighted the importance of advanced technical knowledge and innovation in shaping sustainable built environments. Pursuing the MSc Structural Engineering with Materials at NTU was a natural progression, a step that allowed me to refine my expertise and contribute to the future of engineering.

Does the “real” NTU match what you’d imagined? How does it compare with your friends’ experience at other universities?

Absolutely! The “real” NTU has not only matched but exceeded my expectations. I had imagined a university that was academically strong and supportive but experiencing it firsthand has shown me just how student-focused and forward-thinking NTU truly is. The personalised academic support, flexible learning options, and inclusive campus culture have made my journey both enriching and manageable, especially as a part-time student.

Compared to my friends at other universities, I have noticed that NTU offers a more tailored and holistic approach to education. Every university has its own unique strengths, and my friends at other institutions have had positive experiences in their own ways. However, what sets NTU apart for me is its emphasis on student development, practical learning, and the strong sense of community. The support systems in place, from academic guidance to career services, have made a noticeable difference in how confident and prepared I feel for the future. Also, NTU’s commitment to diversity and innovation really sets it apart.

How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?

Innovative, supportive, and industry-focused. Build your future here.

What’s next for you after NTU?

After completing my MSc in Structural Engineering with Materials at NTU, my next step is to apply the advanced knowledge and skills I have gained to real-world engineering challenges. I am aiming to take on a more specialised role within the structural engineering sector, focusing on sustainable design and innovative material applications. My goal is to contribute to projects that prioritise resilience, efficiency, and environmental responsibility, whether in infrastructure development, consultancy, or research.

I also plan to pursue chartered status with a professional body, which will further validate my expertise and open doors to leadership opportunities in the field. Thanks to the strong academic foundation and industry exposure I have received at NTU, I feel confident and well-prepared to take this next leap in my career.
