NTU’s pioneering Virtual Production facilities, especially the LED wall, gave me the real‑time industry experience that shaped my career.
More about Akshay Raman
Why did you choose NTU and your course?
I chose this course, as I was looking for upskilling my creative and technical skills in software's like Unreal, Maya, Houdini and Nuke. I thought Virtual production would be the best option for me to use these skills in live production, especially with unreal engine and real time compositing and working with LED video walls which is interesting and cutting-edge. I chose NTU as they were the pioneers in this technology in the UK.
What was your favourite thing about studying in the School of Art & Design?
The facilities and amenities they provide for the students.
What do you think of the course facilities? How do they compare to your work in industry?
The course had the LED wall facilities which I utilised the most, which has helped me gain real time experience in working with live projects.
Did you get a chance to work on any live projects or competitions during your studies?
I have contributed my support for the projects created at the NTU virtual production suite. I worked on projects like THE KEEPER AND CYBER PUNK. The experience was helpful for me to gain insights on how to work with live projects.
Did you get involved with any other opportunities at NTU?
I was the course representative during my study. It helped me gain leadership skills, management skills and organisational skills.
What job are you currently doing and what does it involve?
I am currently working as an Immersive trainer at Birmingham open media, where I train people who want to upskill their industry software skills with cutting-edge software's like unreal engine and blender. I also actively train them with Virtual production and camera tracking technologies along with Motion capture. I basically lead the bootcamps which runs for 12 weeks each term.
How has your experience at NTU helped you in your current role?
A lot. I would really appreciate the support given by my lecturers and especially my course leader, who supported me a lot during course time and with my project work, which made me become a better person with more skills and knowledge. I use the skills like troubleshooting in my day to day works as I had to do that a lot during my course time.
What would your advice be to current Art & Design students?
Focus on your project, use the facilities and utilise them. Don't expect anyone to teach you everything. Take advice and suggestions but try your best to solve things. Try to make as many contacts as possible during your student period.
What was the process of getting to where you are today?
Planning, time management, optimising resources, scheduling, being proactive, Focussed, Patience, having consistent portfolio development and upgrading your skill sets, Industry contacts etc.
