I have been able to already positively apply my learning to my role and have had successes from that. We also have some incredible expertise in differing fields in my cohort from who I have also been learning.

More about Joy

Why did you choose to do the Senior Leader Apprenticeship?

To develop my skills as a leader and to further my knowledge in business whilst remaining in the workplace. The opportunity to develop through an apprenticeship has enabled me to undertake work and gain knowledge outside of my role, but within the organisation supported by our executive and non-executive team.

What stands out about NBS and NTU?

In addition to educating, for me the team at NTU/NBS have been pivotal in providing support and understanding. They have all undertaken study whilst managing a full-time job and balancing having a young family like I am. That’s not to say they haven’t pushed me though…

How do you believe this apprenticeship will affect both your current job role and future career?

I am already applying the skills I am learning which means I can develop the commercial element of my portfolio with confidence and underpinning knowledge. This in turn is supporting both the organisation and my future career prospects, by demonstrating these new skills practicably in terms of securing new business contracts into a non-commercial organisation.

What do you think of the facilities available at NBS?

The facilities have been great and accessible, I choose to park within a 15 minute daily walk for me. The lecture building has everything you need and have made the experience slightly easier for everyone, particularly when I myself had coronavirus and attended the class virtually in real time whilst others attended in person - much more helpful than watching a recording later.

What advice would you give to someone applying or looking to study the Senior Leader Apprenticeship?

Undertaking a higher/degree apprenticeship is a great way to be able to remain in work whilst simultaneously learning formally through the university and gaining broader knowledge and skills within your own organisation. My advice would be to go for it! It is a perfect opportunity for self-development, growing your network and career opportunities, despite the challenges that I have previously discussed I do not regret my time at NTU at all and am proud of what I have achieved so far.

If you could describe your apprenticeship in 5 words what would they be?

Challenging, insightful, enjoyable, liberating, invaluable.
