Nottingham Law School has given me far more than a qualification; it has given me a home, a community, and a support system.

More about Aliyana

Why did you choose NTU and Nottingham Law School?

I chose NTU and Nottingham Law School because of its strong focus on employability, community, and the opportunities available beyond the classroom. From the moment I visited Nottingham, I could genuinely picture myself building both my education and future here, and NTU felt like the perfect fit.

Are you continuing your postgraduate studies at NTU?

While currently completing my undergraduate degree, I was accepted onto the LLM with SQE 1 & 2 and chose to continue my education at NTU because of the opportunities, support, and professional experiences I have gained throughout my time here. Nottingham Law School has provided me with leadership opportunities, industry connections, and practical exposure that reinforced that this was the right environment for me to continue developing academically and professionally.

What inspired you to study law?

I was inspired to study law through my background in building organisations and humanitarian outreach projects, where I saw how powerful advocacy, leadership, and creating change can be I have always been passionate about understanding people and systems, and law felt like the perfect way to combine both while making meaningful change.

What do you enjoy about your course?

Studying law with psychology has allowed me to explore the intersection between human behaviour and the legal system, which is such an important connection yet rarely discussed in depth. I also love the sense of community within the course, as our smaller cohort has grown together over the past three years and become like family.

What marks out of 10 would you give for course facilities and why?

I would give the course facilities a 9/10 because NTU provides support far beyond the classroom. From wellbeing, financial, and international student support to academic mentors, library staff, accessible online learning resources, diverse study spaces, employability services, and access to legal databases, there is support available for every aspect of student life and learning.

How would you promote NTU to potential students in 10 words or fewer?

NTU invests in both future and personal growth.

What three words would you use to describe Nottingham?

Vibrant, diverse & welcoming.

Where would you recommend visiting in Nottingham?

Nottingham has something for everyone, from great nightlife and live music to theatres, cafes and cultural spaces. I would recommend visiting Ye Olde Salutation Inn at least once, and during my time here I have also loved attending symphonies and ballets at the Theatre Royal.

If you have a (non-academic) problem. Who would you talk to? What would you do?

Over my time at NTU, I have built an incredible support network of friends, mentors, and staff who have made Nottingham feel like home. I would never hesitate to reach out to the people around me, while also making use of NTU’s wellbeing and student support services when needed.

What do you think Nottingham Law School has given you above and beyond a qualification?

Nottingham Law School has given me far more than a qualification; it has given me a home, a community, and a support system. It has also given me the space to grow into myself, challenge my limits, and become clearer on who I want to be both personally and professionally.

Finally, is there anything else you’d like to share?

Moving from Canada to the UK was one of the most daunting but rewarding decisions I have ever made, my time at NTU completely changed the trajectory of my life. My biggest advice would be to say yes to opportunities, put yourself out there, and build community around yourself, because those experiences shape your university journey just as much as the degree itself.
