More about Caroline Wangui

Caroline Wangui Mwangi is a PhD candidate at Nottingham Law School, where she is being supervised by Dr. Dawn Sedman, Dr. Ruth Brittle, and Dr. Helen Hall. Her academic background includes an LLM degree in Human Rights and Justice from Nottingham Trent University, as well as an LLB degree from Kabarak University. Additionally, she is an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, having been admitted to the Bar in 2019.

"My research focuses on the analysis of Anti-Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) laws in Kenya and the impact of FGM on the best interests of the child. Through a social legal analysis, I aim to explore the complex interplay between law and culture. Specifically, I am examining the strengths and limitations of existing legislation in eradicating FGM in Kenya. My ultimate objective is to identify culturally sensitive solutions that can encourage FGM practicing communities to abandon this harmful practice.

Over the past year, I was fortunate to secure the Strategic Research Fund from Nottingham Law School. This funding allowed me to organize a collaborative FGM Conference in partnership with Mojatu Foundation, which took place on 23rd June 2023. The conference served as a valuable platform for stakeholders to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and develop effective strategies to combat FGM. I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with experts in the field and establish important networking connections. The relationships formed during the conference have continued to facilitate ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange. As an early career researcher, this experience has significantly enhanced my visibility and professional development.

I have a deep passion for children’s rights, and I am grateful for the continuous support and opportunities provided by Nottingham Law School to further my expertise in this field."
