More about Emily
Why did you choose to study at NTU?
I chose to study at NTU because of the course delivery, as this was brilliantly represented by the lecturers at the open day I went to. I also loved the fact that I would be able to continue my passion for football alongside my degree because of the Clifton Sports Hub facility and NTU Sport.
What was the highlight of your course?
The highlight of my course was definitely my final year project, because as challenging as it was to learn and apply new mathematical methods, I thoroughly enjoyed applying my love for football with my love for mathematics and statistics.
I also found the maths department extremely supportive throughout my course at NTU, as they were easily accessible and able to provide excellent advice - including supporting me in the process of successfully applying for a placement year.
What have you done since graduating from NTU?
Since graduating, I have continued to work part time as a football/goalkeeper coach, having begun my employment at Nottingham Forest Football Club during the commencement of my final year. I also worked through the summer in an alternate provision school as a teaching assistant and administrator. I am now currently studying on a MSc Data Science course at NTU.
Did studying at NTU help you develop skills for your chosen career?
I found that my undergraduate degree really supported my ability to analyse data and actively problem solve, which I regularly do at Nottingham Forest Football Club. Similarly, a specific module named 'Professional Maths Skills', really supported my ability to simplify complex information, which was extremely beneficial when I was working in the school.
Advice for others?
My advice to others would be to follow your passion and believe in yourself. Completing any degree is challenging, but when you are studying a degree in Maths and you face hurdles or setbacks, it is all part of the process of becoming a brilliant mathematician, because you can use these experiences to make you a brilliant problem solver and an even better person! Plus... we all know that if you tell anyone that you are studying maths, they will automatically assume that you are the cleverest person in the room!.
