More about Naomi
Why NTU...
What inspired you to study your subject?
"A few personal values and academic interests inspired me to study Occupational Therapy. I have always been a naturally creative and empathetic person, and I enjoy getting to know people and learning about their stories. Occupational Therapy closely aligns with these values, as it emphasizes supporting and empowering individuals in a way that brings confidence, meaning and fulfilment to their lives. I am especially drawn to the profession’s holistic approach, which focuses on engaging in activities that enhances an individuals’ health and wellbeing throughout the recovery process, rather than solely focusing on their condition.
I enjoy reading, learning and conducting research, and Occupational Therapy allows me to regularly think reflectively and apply creative problem-solving skills. This subject also brings together a few areas I find academically engaging, such as sociology, psychology and anatomy.
Lastly, I value learning from diverse perspectives, and I especially appreciate the global outlook presented within the study of Occupational Therapy. This broadens my understanding of the varied experiences of individuals and communities."
Why did you choose your course and NTU?
"NTU offers me a supportive atmosphere, academic excellence and professional credibility, which is exactly what I was looking for when deciding on where to pursue higher education. When I first visited my campus, the welcoming and positive environment made a lasting impression on me. I was also impressed by the modern, well-kept and state-of-the-art facilities, which demonstrated the university’s commitment to provide an excellent learning environment. NTU’s outstanding reputation further helped my decision. The balance between theoretical learning and practical experience is what I appreciated the most. This ensures that all students are fully equipped for real-life professional scenarios. As an Occupational Therapy student, the course guarantees a fully recognised qualification. It is accredited by the Royal College of Occupational Therapy and approved by the Health and Care Professions Council."
What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?
"My experience on the course has been amazing. My Occupational Therapy cohort is very supportive, and I really appreciate how we are of different ages and come from different walks of life. This has enriched our learning environment, particularly during class discussions and group activities, where everyone shares their experiences.
The highlight of my course so far has been the induction week. It exceeded my expectations and helped me feel settled in with my course mates very quickly. From the very start, we were encouraged to think about the role of occupational therapists and the impact they have on the lives of people. One memorable activity involved our cohort taking part in a range of occupations together, which created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. This also allowed us to get to know each other in an engaging way."
What does Social Sciences mean to you?
"Social Sciences to me means understanding the world in its full complexity. It involves looking beyond the surface to understand how people think and interact in society, and why they do so. At its core, social sciences are about empowering individuals and making a positive impact in their lives. Being able to do these things through my chosen career is something I really value."
Support...
What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?
"I have found that the tutors and staff at NTU have been consistently reliable and supportive, creating a sense that we are all in this journey together.
My tutors especially are very approachable and attentive. They regularly check in to ensure that we are managing well academically and personally. Their passion for Occupational Therapy is truly evident in the way they teach, contributing to a nice learning environment. Additionally, they actively invite feedback on our sessions and are open to making adjustments that benefit our overall learning experience."
Outside of the Lecture Theatre...
Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?
"Yes, making friends and settling in at NTU has been such a lovely experience. As a commuter who lives in a completely different city, I was aware that I might have had to put in a bit more effort to get to know people in my course. However, being friendly, doing my best to be consistently present in lectures despite the long commutes and making positive contributions to class discussions really paid off. I have met some amazing people in my course who have been supportive and made my university journey so far, memorable. I am someone who is very self-motivated. However, meeting people who are equally driven, enthusiastic, hardworking and determined has made such a positive impact on my drive for success."
The Next Steps...
What’s next for you after NTU?
"After completing my studies at NTU, I look forward to working as a qualified occupational therapist particularly in the paediatric field. In the long term, I am open to several pathways, including potential further academic study.
Another long-term goal is to work in countries where access to healthcare is limited and where occupational therapy may not be widely known and understood. I believe this would be an incredibly meaningful and fulfilling opportunity, enabling me to develop unique clinical skills while contributing to the advancement of the profession on a global scale. It will also allow me to advocate for occupational therapy.
Additionally, practicing abroad would give me the chance to learn first-hand about different cultures, and improve my language abilities."
How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?
"One of the things that I really appreciate about my course is that we occasionally have guest lecturers from a variety of Occupational Therapy specialties. They share their professional journeys, from the start of their career to their current roles, which I find inspiring. They encourage us to ask questions and are willing to guide us if we would like to explore their area of practice further.
A guest lecture that stood out to me related her experience of when she worked as an occupational therapist in a rural part of Australia. She described it as a very rewarding experience and her story strengthened my own interest in working abroad in the future. Experiences like these encourage me to achieve my career goals and broaden my understanding of the profession."
Advice...
What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?
"I would strongly recommend going for it. Studying Occupational Therapy so far has been such an amazing experience, offering countless opportunities to be reflective and expand perspectives.
As a commuter, studying at NTU is very convenient. The transport links are reliable and well-connected, including frequent bus services running between the university campuses and Nottingham train station, which makes travelling to and from lectures straightforward.
I would also advise being present in lectures as often as possible. Commuting comes with its own challenges, and at times it may feel easier to stay home rather than travel to university, especially during the cold, grey months and for early-morning lectures. However, being organised, having a positive mindset and doing your best to be present at lectures will make such a difference in settling in and getting to know your course mates better. As I have previously mentioned, the tutors and staff at NTU are so understanding, friendly and supportive, so make sure you communicate with them if anything comes your way.
Overall, I would advise to have a positive mindset and enjoy every bit of it."
