Home or overseas tuition fee status

Your tuition fees pay for your teaching and access to university services that enhance your learning. Find out how much you’ll pay and how student loans can help to cover your fees and living costs.

New students

We assess your fee status based on the information that you provide in your application form. This fee status, in most cases, will apply to all years of study.

In some cases, we may require additional information or may need you to provide evidence to support your fee status decision. If this is the case, we’ll contact you by email and request that you complete a Fee Assessment Form. This will be shortly after you have received an offer but in some circumstances, could be later in your application journey.

Eligibility criteria for Home status for tuition fee purposes can be found on the  UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) website. Nottingham Trent University adheres to UKCISA guidance for all fee status decisions, unless a discretionary policy is in place for special circumstances.

If you think that an incorrect decision regarding your fee status has been made, please firstly refer to the UKCISA guidance and then contact the university to advise you of your next steps. It is your responsibility to notify us if you think an incorrect decision has been made.

Fee status decisions are made individually by each institution.

Continuing students

In most circumstances, your fee status will stay the same for your duration of study. There are limited circumstances in which your fee status will change. Please refer to UKCISA guidance to determine whether you believe you are eligible for a change in fee status.

If you believe this is the case, you will need to contact the university to advise you of your next steps.

FAQs

I have received an offer and my fee status is wrong– what should I do?

Firstly, check the UKCISA guidance and then contact our Fee Assessment team at feestatus@ntu.ac.uk. You will be sent a Fee Assessment form to complete. This may ask you to provide further evidence of your fee status (for example, - a copy of your passport). The form will tell you what information you will need to provide.

I have checked the UKCISA guidance and I have noticed that I have provided wrong information on my application form and it has affected my fee status outcome – what should I do?

You should correct the information on your application form if you can. If you have applied via UCAS, this information will be visible to all institutions you have applied to.

If you have applied directly to the University and you are unable to update the applicant portal, you can contact our Admissions team via the ASKNTU form. Once this is updated, contact our Fee Assessment team at feestatus@ntu.ac.uk, who will review the information. If we require further information, we will send you a Fee Assessment form to complete. We will confirm our decision via email.

I have filled out the Fee Assessment form – am I entitled to any scholarships?

Fee status is not related to scholarships and we are unable to confirm your eligibility. If you are an international student, you can find more information regarding scholarships here.

If you are a home student, you can find more information regarding bursaries and scholarships here.

I have made an Advance Payment and require a refund – can I request a refund from feestatus@ntu.ac.uk?

No, this is not related to your Fee Status so we are unable to help with this. Information on refunds is available here.

I have been asked for evidence of my right to study in the UK/settled status – what is this?

This document serves as evidence of your right to live and/or study in the UK. For UK citizens, this is typically a British passport. For individuals who have settled status, it is usually proof of Indefinite Leave to Remain, such as an eVisa and share code. In some cases, a valid visa may also meet this requirement.

What is a share code?

A share code is a code which allows you to view and prove your immigration status. It is linked to your eVisa.

To access your share code, log into your UKVI account and select 'Get a share code'. Select 'To prove my immigration status for anything else' as your reason for getting a share code. This will generate a code beginning with 'S' which can then be shared with universities to prove your immigration status. Codes are valid for 90 days. We are unable to verify codes that do not begin with 'S'.

I have been asked for evidence of my ordinary residence - what is this?

This refers to the place where you have habitually, normally, and lawfully lived by choice within the relevant residence area for your fee status category. Please refer to the UKCISA guidance to confirm which category and residence area apply to you.

If we have requested evidence, you will usually need to provide three documents – one from each of the three years before your course start date – that show your name and your address. Examples include (but are not limited to) bank statements, council tax bills, and mobile phone bills. Any document that clearly shows your name, the date it was issued, and your address should be acceptable.

In some categories, a relevant family member’s residence may be used to meet the ordinary residence requirement. Please consult the UKCISA guidance for details.

I have settled status in the UK and have been living in the UK for over 3 years – will I be considered ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes?

It is likely but the final decision will depend on the information submitted in your application form or your Fee Assessment form. Your offer email will confirm the Fee Status decision made on receipt of your application. If you have completed a Fee Assessment form, we will confirm the outcome of your assessment via email. If you believe either of this to be wrong after reviewing the UKCISA guidance, it is your responsibility to contact us at feestatus@ntu.ac.uk.

I have Pre-Settled Status – will I be considered ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes?

It is possible, but you will need to meet the stated ordinary residence requirements. Please refer to the UKCISA criteria.

I have EU Settled Status – will I be considered ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes?

It is likely, but the final decision will depend on the information that is provided in either your application form or your Fee Assessment form. Please refer to the UKCISA criteria.

I have a dependent visa and have been living in the UK for over 3 years – will I be considered ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes?

As you will have an expiration date on your right to be in the UK, it is unlikely that you will qualify for the home fee rate. However, please refer to the UKCISA criteria and contact us at feestatus@ntu.ac.uk if you feel an incorrect decision has been made.

I have a skilled worker visa and have been living in the UK for over 3 years – will I be considered ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes?

As you will have an expiration date on your right to be in the UK, it is unlikely that you will qualify for the home fee rate. However, please refer to the UKCISA criteria and contact us at feestatus@ntu.ac.uk if you feel an incorrect decision has been made.

I am an asylum seeker – while I be ‘Home’ for tuition fee purposes?

No, government regulations make no provision for asylum seekers to be entitled to pay the home fee rate.

I am a UK Citizen but have been classed as ‘Overseas’ for tuition fee purposes – how can I correct this?

Firstly, check the UKCISA criteria. You will likely need to have been living in the UK for the previous three years before the start of your course. If you have been living outside of the UK during this time, you may not qualify for the home fee rate. There are situations where if you can evidence that you have been out of the UK temporarily (for example for work on a temporary contract), you may qualify for the home fee rate. If you feel we have made an incorrect decision, please contact us at feestatus@ntu.ac.uk.
