Each year, staff and alumni of Nottingham Trent University are invited to nominate colleagues who they believe have shown excellence in teaching. The criteria includes creating memorable and positive learning experiences; being a catalyst for change; and embodying the discipline, practice or profession for students.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Teaching Award for an Early Career Teacher was awarded to Dr Ian Whittaker from our Physics Department.

“Winning an outstanding teaching award is an absolute honour and reflects the assistance and support I get from my colleagues in physics as well as the students themselves. In a very tough year, being forced to teach remotely has added challenges but also allowed us to trial new and more flexible ways of teaching.”

Ian was nominated for this award by colleagues who wrote enthusiastically about the impact he has made to the provision of online learning within Physics. Ian developed a virtual laboratory and adapted a number of experiments to take place within a virtual environment.

In addition, Dr Ian Whittaker also won the Outstanding Teacher Award at the Student Led Awards Ceremony run by Nottingham Trent University Student Union. Nominators noted his extraordinary support through lockdown, including the on-campus drop-in sessions that he arranged.

“It’s been such a tough year for everybody so it's humbling that students wanted to put that extra effort in to recognise our teaching and support in physics.”

The achievements of this year’s winners will be recognised during future Graduation Ceremonies and each will receive a contribution towards further developing their interests.

The Vice-Chancellor Awards give us an opportunity to celebrate some of the extraordinary activity and accomplishments demonstrated by colleagues across teaching, research and practice. Congratulations to all of our winners. The full list of winners can be found here
