The Emerging Engineers Award is a prestigious and international award presented to Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) members who find themselves in their early career journey. This includes students, graduates and apprentices.

The competition encourages and rewards new and fresh civil engineering ideas, research and best practice in projects and design.

Candidates from all around the world put forward their final papers to compete in regional heats. The final then sees only three papers selected and assessed further.

This year, George Grant, one of our NTU Civil Engineering Apprentices, reached the final and was then named the winner of this international engineering competition. George was awarded a cash prize of £1,500 and the prestigious Institution Medal for his endeavours.

George presented his paper at the online final titled, ‘Developing a New Below Ground Vegetated SuDS Solution’ and was based upon his undergraduate dissertations completed under the supervision of Syed Mohyuddin, Head of Civil Engineering at NTU. The research effort aimed to assist mandatory SuDS implementation, thus combating urbanisation impacts.

George Grant was delighted to receive the award and said:

“My winning research was my dissertation topic of below-ground SuDS so I just wanted to express my many thanks for the support Syed gave me when undertaking my final year project. I remain ever so grateful, as without his guidance and support, I may not have had as much success”.

Syed Mohyuddin considers George’s work as outstanding which has significant contribution towards solving industry challenges in an innovative way. Syed wishes him ‘all the best’ in whatever he aspires to do in his career.
