Nottingham Law School hosts Sports Law Alumni Event

On Wednesday 28 February Nottingham Law School held the first NLS Sports Law Alumni Event.

Exclusively for LLB Sports Law and LLM Sports Law students, the event, organised by Associate Professor in Sports Law Dr Seema Patel, provided students with a unique opportunity to connect with 10 NLS Sports Law graduates to discuss all things employment; careers in sport, law and other industries; studying; research and learning; advice and much more.

The event took place in the Old Chemistry Theatre, and started with a catch up lunch for the graduates who spent time networking with each other. The event then kicked off at 1pm with a panel session where Associate Professor, Dr Seema Patel, interviewed them in front of the student audience. Students were then set group tasks to discuss various sports law issues and the graduates facilitated those debates. The panel then reconvened for a final Q&A session. The students then had the exclusive opportunity to network directly with the graduates. This networking session allowed them to forge connections, seek guidance, and gain valuable industry contacts. Pizza was provided and was a hit!

Dr Seema Patel said "The event was something that I wanted to deliver for a while now, and this year was perfect timing. Over the years I have developed a strong sports law alumni network and wanted to bring them together. The support and feedback has been overwhelming and I am really pleased that the current students found it valuable. It was wonderful to welcome back my graduates and hear about their insights into employment and careers. They loved returning to NTU and sharing their experiences. I have plans to build upon this success and formalise the network in the future."

Alumni and staff stood in a line

Rachael Noble, Paralegal at Winckworth Sherwood LLP, took part in the panel. Rachael, who studied LLB Law at NLS and graduated in 2021, said "Thank you for inviting me to attend - what a day! I myself found the day inspiring hearing from the other panel members and it was a very proud moment for me being able to contribute to the discussions and hopefully impact some of the students. The Alumni Network sounds fab. Excited for what’s to come!"

Over 70 LLB Sports Law and LLM Sports Law students were in attendance. One student said "I have attended many events during the course of my studies here at NTU, both onsite and online, but I believe this may well turn out to be a defining moment in my career aspiration of working with FIFA, especially after having heard and networked with Ciara Gallagher and few others. I look forward to receiving more of these kinds of opportunities in the pursuit of both my academic and professional goals."

Students sat around round tables looking towards a panel of alumni

Another student said "The alumni were well selected including both male and female, all graduating over a period of eight years, all with different experiences and career paths. This attention to detail was really valuable. I really appreciated the segment where alumni were sent to each table to discuss sport-related issues. It was a great way to break the ice and for students and alumni to have a casual conversation. Overall I felt that this was a strong example of how modules should be run and the high attendance showed how valuable it was to students."
