By being part of Athena SWAN, NTU is committing to a progressive charter that adopts their ten key principles within our policies, pracices, action plans and culture.

NTU holds a Bronze Athena Swan award as an institution, and NTU Psychology were one of the first departments at Nottingham Trent University to achieve a Bronze Award in 2019. The conferring of Silver status recognises the excellent progress made by the department over the past five years.

In particular, the department have been commended for the progress made in the proportion of women in senior roles, as well as the broader developments in environment and processes in place that support a range of factors affecting equality.

Associate Dean for Psychology at NTU, Professor Duncan Guest said: “I am delighted that NTU Psychology has gained this recognition. It is a testament to the culture and ethos of the department, one that is rooted in a set of shared values and underpinned by our commitment to equality. The award demonstrates the progress we have made and recognises our clear plans to move further forward.”

The department will now work to an action plan that will:

  1. Embed EDI accountability within all departmental activity
  2. Improve equity and inclusion within our diverse student community
  3. Strengthen and communicate measures that reduce bullying and harassment
  4. Progress towards equity in career development
  5. Improve the sense of belonging within the departmental community.
