The project

Ahsan Raza's 'The Zone' is a bespoke workstation designed for creative professionals. Made from marine plywood, it combines natural aesthetics with durability and flexibility. The ergonomic design prioritizes comfort and productivity, featuring a dedicated mat to reduce strain. Dual-tilt functionality enables seamless transitions between tasks, whether reading, drawing, or working on a project.

Carefully crafted with feedback from creatives, The Zone balances functionality and aesthetics for an optimal workspace. Its thoughtful design empowers users to stay focused, inspired, and productive. Perfect for digital artists, graphic designers, and architects, The Zone unleashes creativity and brings ideas to life. By combining sustainability, ergonomics, and adaptability, it sets a new standard for creative workspaces. The Zone is where creativity meets precision, helping users achieve their goals with ease. With its unique blend of form and function, it's the perfect station to spark innovation and drive your projects forward.

The inspiration behind the project

Ahsan explains: "As a creative professional, my work involves a blend of digital and manual activities, including sketching, research, prototyping, and design. However, I found myself constantly switching between different workstations and tables, rearranging my tools and materials to accommodate specific tasks. This lack of flexibility and organisation sparked the idea for my project - to design a workspace that seamlessly integrates various creative activities, allowing me to work efficiently and effectively without interruptions."

Being part of NTU

Ahsan says he considers the experience of working on his project as "exceptional".

"Not only did I acquire valuable skills in software like KeyShot and SolidWorks, but I also had the opportunity to explore various workshop tools and techniques, including metalworking, laser cutting, and CNC machining. What made this project particularly memorable, however, was the challenge of creating a handmade model due to initial constraints. Despite these limitations, I was able to push through and deliver a final product that not only met but exceeded my expectations. The sense of accomplishment I felt upon completing the project was immense, and I was thoroughly pleased with the outcome.

Reflecting on his time at NTU, he says it has been an incredible experience:

"I've had the opportunity to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, including India, Iran, Denmark, and more. Through group projects, I developed essential interpersonal skills like teamwork and collaboration. It was fascinating to see how team members brought different skill sets to the table, allowing us to learn from each other and share our expertise. This exchange not only enhanced our project outcomes but also fostered a supportive and inclusive environment. While there were minor challenges, overall, my experience at NTU was truly awesome.

"My most memorable moment at NTU was visiting David Mellors' workshop with my classmates. We had a fantastic time observing the craftsmanship, including handmade spoons and cutlery."

Closing remarks

Ahsan valued connecting with his fellow students on the course. "Another highlight was our last day, when we presented our projects and then celebrated with a meal together. It was wonderful to bond over good food and words, exchanging warm sentiments with my peers. These moments of camaraderie made my experience at NTU truly unforgettable."

Asked to offer some words of advice for future postgraduate students of product design, he says: "Never stop developing your skills. As designers, we're constantly iterating and refining our work. There'll be times when you'll revisit and revise your designs multiple times, and it can be tough to decide when to stop. However, it's crucial to develop a sense of decision-making and time management, as projects have deadlines and timelines to meet. Learn to trust your instincts and know when your work is ready to move forward. This balance between perfectionism and pragmatism is key to success in design."
