Introduction:

Taught at NTU in Mansfield, we are providing access to alternative routes in higher education. We've built qualifications with the local job market in mind. Each of our higher education courses is relevant, hands-on and work focused.

This course is an innovative programme of study which has been designed in conjunction with local employers. This ensures that you are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required to operate in today’s challenging business and management environments. This is the ideal choice if you want to keep your options open and shape your career aspirations during your studies.

On completion of the foundation degree you will be eligible to top-up to degree level study in Business.

What you’ll study

During your studies you will learn about the key disciplines within business such as operations, HR, marketing, accounting and finance to provide you with a comprehensive overview of how each of these functions impact real-world businesses across the globe.

In the first year you will study six core 20 credit point modules, as follows:

  • Business Development and Operations
  • Personal and Academic Development
  • Foundations of Marketing
  • Essentials of Managing and Organising
  • Finance and Budgeting for Business
  • Data Analysis for Managers

A 6 - 8 week placement within a company/organisation will take place in May/June once the first year teaching and assessment period is completed.

In the second year you will study six core 20 credit point modules:

  • Business Development in a Digital World
  • Employment and Enterprise
  • Marketing for Managers
  • Managing People and Organisations
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Research Methods and Analytics for Managers

Further information on what you'll study

Students will develop their knowledge of the core theoretical concepts relevant to business, apply theory to practice in organisational settings and relate practice to theory, learning relevant disciplinary methods and skills. Students will experience the professional world and gain insight into business practices and behaviours. Developing the skills for reflection is a key element through both years so that students reflect upon and further develop their knowledge, skills and attributes.

Students will be expected to undertake some work or work-like experience during their studies.

How you’re taught

We use a mixture of teaching methods including traditional lectures and seminars, IT workshops, guest lectures, problem-based learning and group discussions. You can explore one of our lecture theatres on our Virtual Tour. You'll then be expected to increase your understanding of the subject area through independent study for each module.

In addition to this you will also be involved in a variety of practical work such as individual and group presentations, student-led seminars, role play, industry-sponsored competitions, and project work. The project-based learning and group activities form important elements of your learning, developing your ability to work in a team and enhancing your employability.

You will also have a number of tutor sessions during each year, which will allow you to:

  • discuss your personal and professional development
  • discuss and gain feedback about your work
  • ask questions about the projects you are working on
  • raise any difficulties you are experiencing relating to your work, personal circumstances or your University experience.

You'll also use our virtual learning environment, NOW, which is a flexible web-based system that gives you 24-hour access to module learning materials and reading lists. It allows you to discuss work with tutors and submit coursework electronically from anywhere in the world.

How you're assessed:

The modules on the course are assessed in a variety of ways including timed assessments, reports, essays, group work, IT-based assessments, presentations, and research projects.

Contact hours

On average you will receive minimum 12 - 15 hours of teaching per week from a combination of seminars and workshops. You will be expected to increase your understanding of business through additional independent study each week.

With an FdA in Business, study for an extra year and you’ll get your BA (Hons) Business at NTU.

Graduates from this course are well-placed to take up a variety of careers within the business industry and students can go straight into work after their foundation degree.

With an FdA in Business you can start your career path towards roles such as Marketing Assistant, Finance Assistant, Human Resources Officer or Customer Service Manager.

Excellent placement opportunities

The course includes an optional sandwich year placement between Year One and Year Two. You can develop your skills and experience in a working environment which is highly valued by future employers.

Students could undertake placement opportunities in small, medium and large businesses in the Mansfield/Ashfield area and in public-sector, private -sector, or voluntary organisations in their chosen area of Business.

Other qualifications and experience

We may also consider credits achieved at other universities and your work/life experience through an assessment of prior learning. This may be for year one entry, or beyond the beginning of a course where applicable, for example, into year 2. Fees and funding

Additional costs

Your course fees cover the cost of studies, and include loads of great benefits, such as the use of our brand-new library, industry-standard workshops and study spaces, support from our expert Employability team, and free use of the IT equipment across our campuses.

Library books

You’ll need to cover the cost of your own books, standard drawing and writing equipment and consumables. However, our NTU in Mansfield library is home to a wide range of books, journals and materials (many of which you can access online) – meaning you may not need to purchase as many books as you might think! Our library team work closely with our academics to ensure that our library collection closely matches the topics you’ll be studying, to provide relevant resources for you to use, free of charge.

Printing and materials costs

Students should also budget approximately £100 per year to cover any printing that they may require to support their studies.

Placements

If you're undertaking a placement year, you'll need to budget for accommodation and any travel costs you may incur whilst on placement. Many of our placement students do earn a salary whilst on placement which can help to cover these living costs.
