Public perceptions of AI use in military contexts

Unit(s) of assessment: Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience; Social Work and Social Policy

Research theme: Safety and Security of Citizens and Society

School: School of Social Sciences

Overview

As laid out in the MOD Artificial Intelligence Strategy, the UK is committed to ethical and transparent uses of AI in Defence.

To further an understanding of public perceptions of this topic, we (Lee Hadlington PI; Jens Binder, Co-I; Maria Karanika-Murray, now at the University of Leicester, Co-I) were commissioned (£91k) to undertake both desk work and empirical work designed to inform stakeholders within the MOJ and associated partners.

The work has to date led to two internal reports to Dstl, to two manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals, and to internal briefings within Dstl. Exploitation is ongoing.
