Role
My role is on the technical team, providing support to student veterinary nurses on the Veterinary Nursing FdSc course with regards to clinical work placements, as well as the veterinary practices that are providing them with a placement. This involves assisting students with sourcing placements and supporting them during placements with their clinical skills portfolio and general wellbeing, as well as visiting them in practice to conduct quality assurance processes. I also carry out internal quality assurance procedures for the course, such as on the students clinical skills portfolio and practical examinations. I provide training to clinical supervisors supporting students and assist with the practical examinations.
Career overview
I qualified as a veterinary surgeon from the University of Nottingham in 2022. Before university, I worked as a veterinary receptionist and following graduation from vet school, I worked as a veterinary surgeon in a small animal veterinary clinic for a period prior to starting my role at Nottingham Trent University in 2023. I have always enjoyed supporting and teaching others, which developed my interest in working within veterinary education. As a veterinary student, I experienced placements in a variety of different veterinary practices and animal husbandry settings, allowing me to resonate with the students I support.
External activity
I enjoy putting my clinical veterinary skills to use by supporting the Animal Unit on the Brackenhurst campus with veterinary care for the small animals and exotics. I am passionate about mental health awareness within the veterinary professional, leading me to becoming a MHFA England Mental Health First Aider and I continue to develop my knowledge in this area through training, research and making connections. I am also a member of the Animal, Rural and Environmental Sciences Equality, Diversity & Inclusion committee, and our aim is to raise awareness on these topics and support staff and students. I am currently working towards my Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice, which will aid me in my current role.
