Research areas

Jonny’s research focuses on the interplay of design, technology and materiality.

For the last couple of decades, this has included practice-based research into the creative possibilities of generative coding as part of the design process and graphic visualisation. Early work focused on Flash and other early web-based interactive technologies.

This resulted in projects such as the SimSweatshop — a game with a conscience that placed the audience in the place of a sweatshop worker and, in the process, the ethical issues at play in the manufacturing of our clothes.

Since then, the research has gone on to involve Processing, P5JS, JavaScript and PHP – using these to play a part in the design process (outputs being things like: prints, video and installations).

External activity

Jonny’s design practice has primary come under the banner of the Newpollution Design Studio. He continues to produce work for a vast array of clients, working with digital technologies in motion and interactive media, developing visual identities and art commissions. This follows working in a digital agency during the burgeoning web industry in the early years of the millennium. Where he worked as a designer on a variety of projects for a variety of large companies.
