Role
As Technical Specialist for Hand Flat Knitting, Phil manages the hand flat knitwear resource in Bonington 116, supporting both undergraduate and postgraduate students across Fashion, Fashion Knitwear and Textiles courses. His role includes maintaining, servicing and repairing the specialist hand flat knitting machines, with particular expertise in Dubied machinery.
Phil provides technical demonstrations, teaches specialist knitting techniques, and supports students in developing their skills, helping them to troubleshoot technical challenges and realise their creative ideas through knitted textile production.
Career overview
Phil began his career by studying at Derby College and Nottingham Trent Polytechnic, where he gained City & Guilds qualifications alongside ONC and HNC awards in knitting machine mechanics and textiles. During this time, he also completed an apprenticeship as a knitting machine mechanic.
Following his studies, Phil spent many years working within the textile industry for companies including Courtaulds and Toray Textiles, undertaking a range of technical and engineering roles specialising in knitting machinery. He joined Nottingham Trent University in 2010 as a Senior Technician and has since progressed to the role of Technical Specialist, bringing extensive industry knowledge and expertise to support learning, teaching and innovation in knitwear and textile design.
