Helen Smart is the Course Leader for the Level 6 BA (Hons) Social Work Degree Apprenticeship. She teaches across the Social Work courses and also works as a Personal Tutor, supporting students throughout the Social Work programmes.

Career overview

Helen Smart is a Registered Social Worker who qualified in 2004, following several years of experience in adult social care. She has worked for a range of local authorities within adult services, primarily supporting adults with learning disabilities, as well as working in generic teams.

She worked for Nottinghamshire County Council from 2016, undertaking a variety of roles including Social Worker, Senior Practitioner and Team Manager.

As a Practice Educator, she was responsible for the assessment of social work students on placement and those completing their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE). As a Best Interests Assessor, she carried out assessments under the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards process.

More recently, Helen moved into social work education, spending a year at the University of Nottingham before joining Nottingham Trent University in July 2024.
