Construction and Quantity Surveying facilities

Find out about the industry-standard facilities available across our construction and quantity surveying courses. From the studios and workshops to the study centre, there is space and resource for everyone to work, learn and develop their projects and designs.

Our facilities

Students working in the materials testing and light structures laboratory, Maudslay workshops

Materials testing / light structures laboratory

Our laboratories offer a range of equipment to test materials commonly used within the civil engineering and construction industries. All of our machinery is calibrated to high-quality standards to ensure the most accurate results.

Students working in the concrete laboratory, Maudslay workshops

Concrete laboratory

Our workshops are the perfect way to learn about the importance of concrete testing and include specific areas for concrete batching and strength testing facilities for designing cubes, prisms and beams.

Geotechnical / soils laboratory

Our  labs are the perfect place for learning about the properties of soil and the ground upon which structures are built. Software such as EcoSlope and Prokon are available to supplement the equipment and machinery.

Students working on computers in the study centre, Maudslay building

Study centre

Based in our Maudslay building, our study centre is perfect for private study and comes equipped with computers, large format plotters and generous desk space. You can also use the space to access both the latest and archived online journals and publications relevant to your course.

MAU CNC lathe

CNC lathe

The CNC lathe is a machine used for specialist cutting, sanding, knurling, drilling and deformation of metal based materials. You can use this equipment for activities such as metalworking, woodturning, metal spinning and thermal spraying.

3D printer

3D printers

We have a range of 3D printers, including a medical grade printer, that offer the ability to produce models and full scale prototypes. You’ll receive expert training and advice from lab technicians on how to full use this fantastic piece of equipment.

CNC 4 axis milling machine

CNC 4 axis milling machine

A milling machine is one of the most commonly used processes in the construction industry for machining parts to specific sizes and shapes. Our HAAS machine offers a perfect way to develop and design your projects, and you'll receive expert training and support from our dedicated team of lab technicians.

Other facilities and equipment

You’ll be able to work with our large and small format laser cutting machines to progress your designs in a range of materials.

Take the opportunity to use our wide range of surveying equipment such as total stations (reflector-less and robotic) GPS, and levels for class practical sessions and project work.

Software includes Geosite, LSS and Topsurv for survey data processing.

You can use this workshop space to test air flow, electrics and heating systems.

You'll have access to a range of software to aid your project developments:

  • Adobe Creative Suite Web Premium CS5 (including Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamworks, Acrobat Pro);
  • Autodesk Productivity Suite (including AutoCAD, Revit, 3DS Max Design with VRay);
  • Cinema 4D Artlantis, Rhino, Solidworks, Primavera, Vectorworks and Hevacomp;
  • Microsoft Office.
