Batuhan and Alina on their wedding day

More about Alina

What inspired you to choose NBS and your course?

I chose NBS because it is a modern business school with a practical approach to learning and a strong international focus. As someone from Russia, I wanted to gain a global perspective and learn about different business cultures. The MSc in Management and International Business was a great opportunity to develop my skills and grow both personally and professionally.

What motivated you to pursue a postgraduate qualification, and what were you doing before starting the course?

During my Economics Bachelors degree in Russia, I realised that international experience would be valuable for my future career. This motivated me to pursue a Masters degree abroad. Before joining NBS, I completed a Pre-Masters course at Nottingham Trent International College. It was very helpful in preparing me for my studies at NBS, as it helped me understand the differences between the Russian and UK education systems and adapt to the UK’s academic requirements.

While studying the Pre-Masters course, I also met and shared lectures with Batuhan Ersoy – we are now married and living in Istanbul together!

What was the most valuable or enjoyable aspect of your course, and why?

I really enjoyed my time at NBS, especially the practical approach to learning. We worked on many tasks that involved contacting local businesses, building connections, and stepping outside our comfort zone. I appreciated that we were not just memorising theories for exams, but applying our knowledge in real-life situations. This gave me valuable practical experience. Another highlight was meeting new people and making friends from diverse backgrounds. I am still in touch with some of my former classmates, which makes my NBS experience even more special.

Did you take part in any projects, work placements, extra‑curricular activities or experiential learning opportunities? What skills or experience did you gain?

During my studies at NBS, I had the opportunity to take part in several exciting international and industry-focused projects. One highlight was a study week at LUISS Business School in Rome, where we explored the luxury fashion industry and developed a business strategy for Capucci. We worked alongside students from LUISS and also enjoyed a private excursion to Bulgari.

I also took part in an exchange programme at Brno University of Technology in the Czech Republic, where we worked on a strategy development case study and presented a final project.

In addition, I joined the Industry Leaders Programme, which connected me with an industry professional who helped me navigate my career and secure an internship at a local charity organisation.

For my MSc final project, I worked with Pattonair Ltd, an aerospace and defence company, for two months, helping to develop short- and long-term strategies.

I found these experiences incredibly valuable. Each project introduced me to a different industry, new challenges, and new ways of thinking. They helped me apply my knowledge in practice and gave me a broader understanding of business strategy across different sectors.

What is your current role, and what does a typical day involve?

After graduating, I worked at Deloitte for two years as an Audit Consultant. I then moved to Istanbul, where I spent four years working in Financial Control and Budgeting. My most recent position was Senior Specialist in Budgeting and Financial Control.

Which skills or experiences gained at NBS do you use most in your role?

Working in an international company allowed me to apply my knowledge of cultural differences every day. I collaborated with colleagues from Colombia, Norway, Sweden, Albania, Kazakhstan, Russia, the USA, and other countries. My role involved organising team meetings and coordinating budgeting workflows. My experience at NBS helped me understand diverse cultural perspectives and communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds, which was very valuable in my daily work.

What has been your biggest career achievement so far?

Financial achievements are easier to measure, and one of my biggest was ensuring that the company’s cash needs were consistently met and all financial obligations were fulfilled on time, without budget shortfalls. I also identified opportunities to reduce costs by addressing inefficiencies among underperforming contractors.

However, I believe that building strong relationships with talented professionals in my field is equally important. I am proud to have met people who became not only trusted colleagues but also friends. For me, these professional relationships are among the most valuable achievements of my career.

What advice would you give to someone considering this course at NBS?

Don't be shy! Take advantage of every opportunity NBS offers, and you will have a year full of valuable and exciting experiences. Don't just spend your time studying. Get involved, explore new opportunities, join a community, and make friends. These experiences and connections will make your time at NBS truly special!
