More about Louis

In 2020, Louis became the winner of the TARGETjobs Future CFO Undergraduate of the Year Award. The award was sponsored by professional accounting body the ACCA. Read the full story here.

What made you choose to study at NTU?

“NTU is such a progressive University, in more ways than one. Having been in the top ten of the People & Planet University League since 2009, I felt the things that I am personally most passionate about were mirrored in the culture and expectations here. Of course, the strong community, the growing reputation, and Nottingham being such a diverse and exciting city to live in, were also big pull factors for me.”

What were the key features that attracted you to your course?

“I knew that I wanted to enter the financial sector of business after graduation, and so my search started there. NTU’s Accounting & Finance was a course with a reputation on the rise and having most recently placed 4th in The Guardians University League Table 2020, I think it’s fair to say that it’s really establishing itself as one of the best places to study accounting in the country. Not only that, but the course staff are real life accountants/finance professionals, who have worked in industry and have years of real-world experience, which I have found to be invaluable.”

What do you enjoy most about your course?

“I enjoy the variety of teaching methods across all different modules. In some lectures we follow worked examples, in others we interact with the lecturer, and in seminars we could be working individually, or in groups, presenting and developing in many more ways than one. To summarise, you learn so much more than just Accounting & Finance on my course, you really develop as a very well-rounded businessperson in general as well.”

What work experience/placement have you completed?

“In my 3rd year at NTU I completed a placement year with Lidl GB the British branch of the German discount retailer. This placement was ideal for me, as it was a rotational scheme, which allowed me to explore multiple different areas of one of the largest retailers in the world. I spent time in Sales, Logistics, Property and of course Accounts, implementing the theories that I have learnt throughout my studies so far, whilst also developing new skills that I’m looking forward to taking with me as my professional career takes shape.”

How will your course and placement enhance your employability for your chosen career? What skills have you gained?

“Aside from the fact I was offered a role within the company upon graduation, I developed as a professional more than I could have imagined. I was given the opportunity to present new ideas to Heads of Sales and Logistics. I have learnt how to build and maintain professional relationships. Most of all, I think my placement provided me with career direction, and more than ever, I now feel I know exactly where I want my future to go.”

What opportunities have you had as a result of studying with NBS? How have these activities contributed to your university experience?

"The one advantage of going to University that I don’t think gets enough attention is the additional opportunities you get alongside your degree. Throughout my time here, I have tried to maximise what I get out of each opportunity I have been given, and at NTU the opportunities are endless. During my first year I got involved in the University Business Challenge, and also went on a month-long Summer School at BI Oslo, in Norway. My time at BI opened me up to a whole new international network, and was certainly one of the best things I have done with my time at Uni. Since then, I have taken part in the Enterprise module during my 2nd year, which enabled me to research and start my very own business with help from The Hive. Now, heading into final year, I am a CERT mentor, looking forward to welcoming the next cohort of NBS students; and also President of EnactusNTU, leading a team of social entrepreneurs, to improve lives across Nottingham and the world."

What are your plans for the future?

“My immediate plans for post-graduation include a desire to continue my studies in the form of a master’s degree in either Accounting & Finance or pure Finance. I still feel there is more for me to learn at an academic level in my field, and I look forward to doing so. After that, I would like to one day pursue a role in Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions, or Investment Banking.”
