I was encouraged to grow and become independent in my thought process. This shaped me into the lawyer I am today.
More about Satinder
Satinder studied Law LLB and LPC at NTU and is thriving in her role as an Associate Solicitor in Real Estate Finance and Restructuring/Real Estate Energy for a leading international law firm. Satinder is proud to be awarded the Law Society (Peterborough District) Trainee of the Year, as well as being a mum of two young children.
Why did you chose to study at NTU.
I enjoyed attending an open day at NTU. My research into their Law LLB Hons undergraduate programme clearly demonstrated a strong (and proven) track record with their learning programme, which translated to a number of work opportunities. The University has a great reputation, with the law campus located in the heart of Nottingham City - it was a definite ‘win’ for me!
What did you learn – both inside and outside of lectures?
Independence, conviction and courage!
Learning about law was a pleasure. I recall each of my lecturers having a wonderful and unique personality - in fact, it was refreshing that each of them encouraged us individuals to show our true self whilst learning about the law. This is something I carry with me to this day.
Through learning, I was encouraged to grow and become independent in my thought process, which in turn would reflect in the way I presented my work - whether written or presented. Although a bit scary at first, this encouragement to be independent in my learning has really shaped me into the lawyer I am today.
Outside of lectures - was an absolute hoot! I made lifelong friends and we reminisce about our days ‘hanging out’ in the student union (or even library), living life and soaking in ‘the uni experience’.
To this day I love walking through Nottingham and past the law campus on Chaucer Street - it brings back great memories.
Did you undertake a placement year?
I didn't undertake a placement year - but my husband (who also attended NTU alongside me) did so. I recall his journey and the doors that opened to him following graduation - all because he had undertaken a placement year.
What is your current role and what does it involve?
Gosh, where do I start! I work as an Associate for a renowned international law firm. I qualified into Real Estate and Real Estate Energy. On a day-to-day basis I deal with a number of Real Estate Finance and Energy matters, from the inception of a Wind Farm or Solar Farm to acting for a funder or investment company to finance Real Estate and Energy projects. The work is fast paced and intense - but never a dull moment!
What attracted you to this field of work?
During my training contract I was able to find my passion - all things Real Estate! It's super different to learning about Land Law and then the application of the same in the real world - you get to combine practical and theoretical knowledge on a day-to-day basis.
What challenges have you faced?
The biggest challenge was the passing of my younger brother during my final exams. It was a difficult time in life, and the staff and pastoral support at NTU got me through a difficult time. I had to repeat my final exams - but through their support I was able to pass and graduate with honours. To date this is my biggest achievement - I always look back on this bittersweet moment.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
Winning the Law Society (Peterborough District) Trainee of the Year. Becoming a mum of two and returning to the world of work to a renowned international law firm.
