Why NTU...

What inspired you to study your subject?

"I was inspired to study Sociology and Criminology from my own lived experiences. Both of these subjects provide me with the ability to understand how society truly shapes us as individuals and how to challenge injustice in a way that positively impacts the world we live in today."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"I chose this course specifically because of how diverse it is. Sociology and Criminology at NTU allows me to not only understand social patterns but also to deeply explore crime and inequality. The combination of these subjects appealed to me especially with the variety of unique modules provided at NTU!"

What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?

"My experience has been very positive! A highlight would be first year because I didn’t really know what to expect but there was so much foundational support and room to explore my own interests freely within modules. It was definitely a very engaging and motivating year for me."

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"Alongside my studies, I serve as a course representatives and I am part of the Black Leadership Programme. Both opportunities have developed my communication skills, my leadership and my confidence and have complemented my studies immensely whilst setting me up for the future ahead."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"Social Sciences is about making a real difference, equality, and people. I have been able to understand social issues deeply and motivated to contribute positively to the society around me through supporting local communities and bridging gaps between peoples."

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The support at NTU has been excellent; tutors are approachable, encouraging, and willing to support. The staff have created a culture of support that is readily accessible to all students, and this has made me feel confident, supported, and secure throughout my studies."

Outside of the Lecture Theatre...

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Definitely! Settling in and making friends was easy simply because of the friendly atmosphere at NTU. Societies, events, and classes made it simple to connect with people and feel part of the NTU community."

What’s next for you after NTU?

"After studying at NTU, I hope to work in a people-focused role where I can make a meaningful impact within community, justice, or public sector work."

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"NTU supports my career goals by balancing academic learning, employability driven modules, 1 to 1 session, and extracurricular opportunities that build real-world skills and confidence. The style of learning at NTU covers all grounds and promotes a healthy relationship with employability very early on."

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

"My biggest advice would be go for it! There is so much on offer at NTU and this course equips you with a wide range of experiences, transferable skills and career pathways.

Additionally, Sociology and Criminology provides you with the right tools to understand the society we live in and make real difference- your perspectives are more needed now than ever!"
