Why NTU...

What inspired you to study your subject?

"I first encountered sociology in Year 9 when I chose it as part of my GCSEs, without fully knowing what it involved. From the very first lesson, I was hooked Learning about how society operates, how social structures shape our lives, and how change can be created really resonated with me. That first interest quickly turned into a passion, which led me to study sociology at A Level, and now at undergraduate level."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"NTU stood out to me because the Sociology course goes beyond theory and encourages students to engage critically with social issues. The modules reflected my interests in inequality and social change, and the teaching style felt supportive and engaging. I also valued NTU’s strong student community, which made me feel confident that I would be supported throughout my degree."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?

"My experience on the course so far has been incredibly positive. The modules have been engaging and thought-provoking, with my highlights being my third-year modules, Race and Culture and Identities and Intimacies. These modules have deepened my understanding of individuals and how individual experiences, culture, and identity shape people’s lives.

One of the biggest highlights has been meeting like-minded students on my course, with whom I have been able to build strong connections. I have also really valued the supportive relationships I have developed with lecturers, who have consistently guided and encouraged me throughout my studies."

Have you been involved in any projects or extra-curricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"Alongside my studies, I have balanced university with running my own lash extensions business. Managing my business has strengthened my time-management, organisation, and communication skills, while also deepening my understanding of customer relations, gendered labour, and informal work, which links closely to sociological themes explored on my course. This experience has encouraged me to apply sociological perspectives to real-life settings, helping me better understand work, identity, and social interaction beyond the classroom."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"To me, social sciences mean working with people to create meaningful change. It is about understanding social issues, challenging inequality, and using knowledge to transform lives. As someone pursuing a career in corporate social responsibility, I see social sciences as essential in promoting ethics, accountability, and social justice, particularly in standing up for individuals and communities whose voices overlooked."

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"I have always felt well supported by tutors and staff at NTU, from my first year right through to my dissertation. Whether it was asking simple questions in the early stages of my degree or receiving one-to-one guidance from my dissertation supervisor, the support has been consistent and reassuring. I am very grateful to have lecturers who are approachable, kind and genuinely invested in students’ success."

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Yes, I found it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU. From my first day, everyone was approachable and welcoming. As many of us were moving away from home and adjusting to an unfamiliar environment, there was a powerful sense that we were all in it together, which helped create an immediate sense of connection."

What’s next for you after NTU?

"After graduating from NTU, I hope to progress into a graduate role within corporate social responsibility, where I can apply my sociological knowledge to promote ethical and socially responsible practices within organisations. Alongside this, I plan to continue growing my lash extensions business, balancing my professional career with entrepreneurship."

How is NTU helping you to achieve your career goals?

"NTU is helping me achieve my career goals by providing a well-rounded degree that equips me with transferable skills valued by graduate employers. Through my work and careers module, I have had the opportunity to engage with alumni who share insights into their career journeys, which has helped me better understand the range of pathways available to sociology graduates. I have also been encouraged to consider postgraduate study, with the choice to progress onto a master’s degree after completing my undergraduate course."

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

"My top tip for anyone thinking about studying BA Sociology at NTU would be to stay open-minded. Studying a social science means engaging with perspectives and experiences beyond your own, so it is important to listen to the world around you, keep up with current affairs, and be aware of social issues. The more you immerse yourself in life outside of your own experience, the richer your learning will be."
