Why NTU...

What inspired you to study your subject?

"I was inspired to study Sociology by my sixth form teacher, who introduced me to the fascinating theories and concepts within the subject. This initial exposure sparked my interest, and when choosing to study Sociology at university, I became particularly intrigued by how these theories can be applied to real-life situations. This not only motivated me to deepen my understanding of the subject, but also encouraged me to apply sociological thinking to my everyday life."

Why did you choose your course and NTU?

"I chose this course because of the wide variety of engaging modules it offers, particularly Service Learning. This module stood out to me as it allows students to conduct primary research and gather data for real organisations, providing a valuable opportunity to apply sociological knowledge in a practical, real-world context. As a prospective student, I was especially drawn to the chance to use my sociological skills to make a meaningful contribution to society. Additionally, NTU’s strong reputation for graduate employability further reinforced my decision, particularly as this is actively supported through modules such as Service Learning."

What’s your experience been like of your course so far? Can you pick out any highlights?

"My experience of the course so far has been thoroughly enjoyable. Over the past three years, I have not only built strong relationships with my course mates, but also developed positive and supportive connections with lecturers and supervisors. One of the main highlights of the course was studying The Body in Sociology, a module I initially had little knowledge of. Completing this module allowed me to discover a new appreciation for sociological theory and deepened my interest in areas of sociology that I had not previously explored."

Have you been involved in any projects or extracurricular activities that have supplemented your studies run through NTU?

"Through the Service-Learning module, I was involved in a research project that significantly developed my understanding of how to conduct primary research to a high standard. This experience was particularly valuable in supporting my studies later on, especially when gathering and analysing my own data for research in other modules. The skills I gained through this project have strengthened my confidence in carrying out independent academic research for my dissertation."

What does Social Sciences mean to you?

"For me, social sciences are essential when working with people. Having a strong understanding of society gives me an advantage when communicating with individuals from different demographics and backgrounds. This knowledge has not only increased my confidence in a range of social situations, but has also helped me better understand aspects of the world that I may not previously have been able to grasp. As a result, I feel more confident moving forward, knowing that I can apply what I have learned to frontline services and my future working career to positively impact others’ lives."

What do you think of the support available from tutors and staff at NTU?

"The support available from tutors and staff at NTU has been phenomenal. I have always felt comfortable seeking guidance whenever I have needed it, and the approachability of both tutors and support staff has made a significant difference to my university experience. In particular, drop-in sessions have played a major role in building my confidence during more stressful periods of study. I also feel that NTU values student voice, with staff consistently listening to and responding to the needs and concerns of students."

Did you find it easy to make friends and settle in at NTU?

"Without question, I found it easy to settle in at NTU and have made many friends for life along the way. I cannot thank NTU enough for providing a welcoming and supportive environment that helped me build these meaningful relationships."

The Next Steps...

What’s next for you after NTU?

"After graduating from NTU, I hope to relocate to either London or Manchester and pursue a career in areas such as corporate sales or related roles. I am excited to begin this next chapter and apply the sociological thinking and transferable skills I have developed throughout my studies to my professional working life."

"NTU is helping me achieve my career goals by developing my confidence, employability, and transferable skills through practical modules such as Service Learning. The strong academic support and focus on real-world application have prepared me to apply sociological thinking effectively in my future career."

What top tips would you give anyone thinking about studying your course at NTU?

"My top tip would be to go for it. This course will keep you on your toes, with engaging content that is always up to date and relevant. Studying Sociology at this level has not only expanded my academic knowledge, but has also helped me better understand myself and the society we live in today."
