Dance to the music…

Music is an integral part of the NTU experience and we pride ourselves on giving all our students, together with staff, and members of the local community, the opportunity to perform in unforgettable concerts, take part in international competitions, develop musical talents, and meet like-minded people from across the University. Whether you are a classically trained musician or looking to form a rock band, we have ensembles and opportunities to suit all tastes and abilities.

What do we offer?

Led by our Director of Music, Matthew Hopkins, our team of experienced and talented music tutors, offer tuition and support for both instrumentalists and vocalists. Tuition is available for students of all abilities – whether you're a complete beginner or you've been playing for years, our team can help. We also offer the opportunity to join a number of ensembles, covering all genres where you can meet new people and develop your musical talents.

The Music Centre situated at our City Campus offers:

  • two practice rooms with upright Yamaha pianos;
  • a large, 200-capacity rehearsal space;
  • a multipurpose studio room;
  • plenty of equipment for you to use; and
  • instrument hire.

All available for NTU students and staff, across all campuses, to use free of charge, all year round.

Ensembles

If you love music, then it’s likely you’ll have a passion for it outside of your studies.  You can get involved with several musical ensembles here at a NTU, providing opportunities to develop your musical talents.  These include NTU Concert Band, String Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, Big Band, Drumline, Chamber Choir and the NTU Choir, which is the largest choir at the University with over 180 members. We also run a Band Development Programme, bringing together like-minded musicians interested in forming a band – all under the guidance of our experience band development leader, Tom Bates.

Societies

Our Students' Union has dozens of musical societies to get involved with, from hard rock and jazz, to Trent Bass – the society for DJs and producers.

There’s also the opportunity to get involved with Fly FM – NTU’s official student radio station.

Music scholarships

We have various scholarships available for talented musicians or those who show great potential. Scholarships give you an opportunity to receive funded music tuition during your time at NTU. Scholarships are available to students who are studying at, or applying to, the University and are awarded on the strength of an audition.

To apply for a scholarship audition, please download and complete an NTU Music Scholarship Application Form for 2017/18 and return it to Matthew Hopkins, Director of Music, via email as soon as possible.
