Being open to unexpected opportunities
Former NTU Mansfield student Harry Atkinson has received the Outstanding Alumnus Award.
Harry is an engineering professional, civic leader, and an alumnus of NTU Mansfield, whose achievements demonstrate the power of combining technical expertise, public service and lifelong learning.
Reflecting on his education journey, Harry remembers that university was not originally part of his plans. "I think one of my main takeaways is that you shouldn't attach yourself to a plan that you made at 18", Harry says. "Things change dramatically and can take you in different directions."
Unexpected opportunities
After leaving school, he began his career through an apprenticeship in the energy sector, gaining valuable practical experience while developing his technical skills. He later re-evaluated his options and returned to education at NTU Mansfield where he successfully completed a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
Today, Harry works as an Electrical Control and Instrumentation Engineer and is soon due to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
Alongside his studies and career, Harry has shown an exceptional commitment to public service. In 2023, at the age of 23, he was elected as a councillor, before becoming Deputy Mayor and, in 2025, the youngest-ever Mayor of Erewash at just 26 years old. As mayor, Harry has championed community engagement, supported local businesses and promoted skills development and opportunities for young people. He is also an active Scout leader and is passionate about encouraging greater participation in civic life, showing that leadership is accessible to people from all backgrounds.
Harry remains dedicated to supporting the local area and has a message for anyone thinking about going back to education:
