Nottingham Law School receives Global Legal Skills Award
Nottingham Law School has received a Global Legal Skills Award in recognition of the School’s strong commitment to global legal skills and international legal education.

Earlier this month, Nottingham Law School had the pleasure of hosting the first Global Legal Skills conference to be held in the UK, featuring delegates from over 16 countries, representing six continents - Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and Australia.
The Global Legal Skills Conference focuses on international legal education and essential skills, including legal writing, legal research, legal reasoning, legal English, translations and advocacy skills. Additional topics include creating appropriate materials and assignments, cross-cultural and intercultural issues, classroom teaching, clinical legal education, academic support, international legal exchanges and related fields.
The delegates attending the conference at Nottingham Law School represented a range of disciplines comprising, legal writing professionals, international and comparative law professors, clinical professors – together with others involved in skills education, law school administrators, law librarians, and ESL/EFL professors.
The opening plenary included an engaging speech by the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Shuguftah Quddoos, with other highlights across the conference programme including a visit to the National Justice Museum, a welcome reception at Metronome and a celebratory formal conference dinner.
During the closing plenary, the GLS Awarding Committee presented Nottingham Law School with a 2023 Global Legal Skills Award, in recognition of the School’s commitment to global legal skills and international legal education.
This latest accolade follows the presentation of an individual 2017 Global Legal Skills Award to Matthew Homewood, Deputy Dean of Nottingham Law School, at the Facultad Libre de Derecho de Monterre in Monterrey, Mexico, in recognition of his personal significant contribution to the promotion and improvement of global legal skills.
Matthew said, “It was a genuine pleasure to host such a prestigious and long-established legal conference at NTU and I have been overwhelmed by the delightful feedback received from delegates on the quality of the papers presented, the environment within which to develop connections with global legal skills professionals across the world, and the sharing of best practice in addressing the contemporary challenges faced. NLS being awarded the 2023 Global Legal Skills Award was a wonderful surprise and is a real testament to all of the work the School does in the global legal skills and international legal education space.”
The conference is closely aligned to NTU's strategy of Connecting Globally and enhancing international partnerships. Find out more about more about NTU’s strategy: University, reimagined.
