The RIBA East Midlands Student Awards highlight the outstanding creativity and vision of architecture students from universities across the region. This year's awards celebrated projects that address global challenges such as sustainability, urban regeneration, and the future of the built environment.

Elliot’s project, “Working Towards a Sustainable Future for Nottingham: A Higher Education Facility for Carpentry and Biomaterial-Enhanced Design,” captured the judges’ attention for its innovative approach to sustainable architecture.

Elliot’s design envisions a pioneering higher education facility in Nottingham that champions carpentry and biomaterials as key disciplines to drive a greener construction industry. The project integrates research into bio-materials, including mycelium insulation panels, offering eco-friendly alternatives for construction to help meet net-zero carbon targets.

Elliot shared his vision for the project:

“Sustainability in architecture needs to be prioritised to provide a better future for the world. This facility connects the past to the present and educates for the future, combining sustainable technologies with architectural tectonics to create a hub of green infrastructure and biodiversity within the heart of Nottingham.”

The facility is designed to reconnect Nottingham’s community through public green spaces and inspire collaboration towards a sustainable future. Elliot's project not only serves as an educational centre but also exemplifies sustainable construction practices, aligning with ambitious carbon reduction goals.

Lois Woods, Course Leader for BArch (Hons) Architecture commented:

“Elliot worked exceptionally hard throughout his final year and really pushed himself to propose a project that could be an exemplar, in Nottingham City Centre, for sustainable design and construction, and by re-using an existing building. He investigated eco-materials and got really stuck into the technical details for the project. I am really pleased this has been commended by RIBA East Midlands. Well done Elliot!”
