Kartikeya’s running the Robin Hood Half Marathon for carcer research at NTU
NTU Engineering Senior Lecturer Dr Kartikeya Walia is preparing to run the Robin Hood Half Marathon this September in support of the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre. After losing a loved one to cancer, Kartikeya is using the challenge to raise funds for vital research to improve the lives of those affected by this disease, and encourages others across the NTU community to support a cause that matters to them.

Alongside his role as a lecturer in NTU’s Department of Engineering, Dr Kartikeya Walia is taking on a challenge for a cause close to his heart. This September, he will be running the Robin Hood Half Marathon to raise funds for the vital work of the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre.
Kartikeya decided to sign up for the challenge after losing his father to cancer in December 2025. Motivated to honour his father’s memory, he wanted to channel his loss into something positive, raising awareness and support for those facing similar journeys.
“It made me want to do something meaningful and contribute, even in a small way, to the kind of research that can make a difference for others”.
Although Kartikeya has previously completed a half marathon, this race carries a more personal significance.
“There’s a much stronger purpose behind it, which makes the challenge both more motivating and more rewarding. I’m excited, but I know it will take consistent effort over the next few months”.
Training is already well underway, with Kartikeya building up to the full distance through regular weekly runs, balancing shorter runs with longer efforts.
"I’ve started training by running 5 kilometres two to three times a week, along with a 10K each week to build my endurance. Over time, I’m hoping to gradually increase my distance and stay consistent leading up to race day."
Beyond the physical challenge, Kartikeya hopes his fundraising journey will encourage others across the NTU community to support causes that matter personally to them.
“If I had one piece of advice for others fundraising, it would be to be open about why the cause matters to you. People connect with genuine stories, and that connection can really help build support".

All donations will go directly to the John van Geest Cancer Research Centre, helping researchers continue their vital work to improve cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
