Nancy, who graduated from NTU’s MA Journalism course in 2018, has built an impressive career in football journalism. Her latest assignment marks another major milestone in a career that has seen her cover some of the biggest stories in football.
Building a successful career in football journalism
Currently working as a football writer for The Athletic, Nancy regularly reports on both the women’s and men’s game, producing in-depth features, interviews and live coverage for an international audience. Her work has included coverage of the Women’s Super League, major international tournaments and breaking football news across the UK and beyond, helping establish her reputation as a respected voice within sports media.
Being selected to cover the men’s FIFA World Cup represents a significant achievement in the highly competitive world of sports journalism and reflects the reputation Nancy has developed within the industry since graduating from NTU.
Staying connected to the NTU journalism community
Despite graduating in 2018, Nancy has remained closely connected to the MA Journalism programme and continues to support and inspire current students interested in pursuing careers in the media industry. Her success story demonstrates the importance of industry experience, perseverance and specialist knowledge in modern journalism, particularly within the fast-moving world of sports reporting.
From NTU to the global stage
Reflecting on her career journey, Nancy credited her postgraduate studies at NTU for helping prepare her for the fast-paced demands of the journalism industry.
“The skills I learned during my MA degree at NTU really set me up for a place in industry and ensured I slotted straight into the newsroom. I have been lucky enough to travel across the country and across the world covering sport, from Wimbledon to the World Cup, the FA Cup final and the EFL play-offs."
“Bringing our readers a piece of the action live from the World Cup has been the most exciting trip yet, with so many amazing stories to share from underdogs pulling off surprise wins to the challenges of the weather for the athletes. Every day is different in sports journalism which makes it the best job in the world,” she concluded.
Developing industry-ready skills at NTU
The MA Journalism course at NTU played an important role in helping Nancy develop the practical skills, newsroom experience and industry confidence needed to succeed in a competitive journalism environment.
Through hands-on training, multimedia reporting and opportunities to work on live news stories, the course prepares students for careers across broadcast, digital and print journalism. Nancy’s achievements highlight the opportunities available to NTU MA Journalism graduates and demonstrate how the university’s industry-focused teaching can help students progress into leading roles within national and international media organisations.
Inspiring the next generation of journalists
Her appointment to cover one of the world’s biggest sporting events is not only a personal achievement, but also a proud moment for the NTU journalism community.
As current students look towards careers in journalism, Nancy’s journey from postgraduate student to international football reporter serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work and a passion for storytelling.
