From building systems that generated close to £1 million in annual revenue to being named Intern of the Year out of 450 interns nationwide, Daniel Rowe’s placement at Enterprise Mobility transformed both his confidence and career direction.

For Daniel, completing a placement year was about far more than gaining experience. It was an opportunity to challenge himself professionally, build industry-ready skills, and better understand the career path he wanted to pursue after university.

My placement was a truly transformative experience that gave me real responsibility, accelerated my growth, and built my confidence beyond what I thought possible. It didn't just prepare me for my career, it shaped it.

Choosing a placement year

Daniel, who studies BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance at Nottingham Business School, decided to undertake a placement year to gain practical industry experience alongside his degree and improve his future career prospects.

I believed gaining practical experience alongside my degree was essential. Not only does it provide valuable insight into the working world, it helps build professional connections, and significantly improves your chances of securing a graduate role after university.

Alongside developing technical knowledge through his course, Daniel credits NTU’s wider employability opportunities with helping him build the confidence and professional mindset needed to succeed during the placement application process.

When exploring placement opportunities, Enterprise Mobility stood out because of its strong reputation, professional development opportunities, and the level of responsibility given to interns.

What impressed me most was how interns are genuinely valued as professionals and entrusted with significant responsibilities, far beyond what I would have expected at this stage in my career.

Building confidence and making an impact

During his placement, Daniel worked across a European-wide department, contributing to revenue analytics, business reporting, website development, and business improvement projects.

One of his biggest achievements was independently developing systems that delivered significant commercial impact to the business.

Some of my key contributions included independently building systems that generated close to £1 million in annual revenue.

Daniel’s responsibilities developed rapidly throughout the placement year, reflecting the trust placed in him by senior colleagues.

Within my first month I was already producing financial information for the COO, which reflected the level of trust placed in interns by senior staff.

Alongside technical development in SQL, VBA, Python and analytics, Daniel also developed professionally through networking, presenting, and representing the organisation externally.

When he began his placement, Daniel described himself as ‘quite introverted’. By the end of the year, he was confidently presenting to large audiences and representing Enterprise Mobility internationally.

When I first started, I was quite introverted, but over time I developed the confidence to speak in front of large audiences, something I would never have imagined before.

Daniel also represented Enterprise Mobility on university panels across the UK and USA, contributed to charity initiatives, and later became a Campus Brand Manager supporting other students with placement opportunities.

Intern of the Year

A standout moment from Daniel’s placement was competing in Enterprise Mobility’s national Intern of the Year competition.

After progressing through multiple presentation rounds and showcasing his achievements to senior leaders and industry professionals, Daniel was ultimately named Intern of the Year 2024/25, placing first out of 450 interns nationwide.

I placed first out of 450 interns nationwide.

The competition involved presenting business improvement ideas, project outcomes, and examples of impact delivered during the placement year.

Daniel’s award-winning projects included developing a revenue optimisation system and creating a talent acquisition website designed to support future recruitment initiatives.

His success reflected both the technical and interpersonal skills he developed throughout the placement, alongside his willingness to embrace opportunities across the organisation.

Employer perspective

Alyssa Kreutzer, Daniel’s Placement Manager at Enterprise Mobility, said:

Daniel was open about what he wanted to learn and impressed us daily with his initiative and creative ways to learn.

She also highlighted the wider value Daniel brought to the business:

His annual project delivered a huge time and financial savings to the business as well.

Reflecting on Daniel’s contribution throughout the placement, she added:

Daniel is incredibly professional, inquisitive, and had a positive outlook on every challenge.

Looking ahead

Daniel’s placement experience has already had a lasting impact on his future career, helping him secure a graduate role in an industry he had always wanted to work in.

Most importantly, it played a key role in helping me secure a graduate role in an industry I had always wanted to be part of.

Now continuing to work part-time alongside his final year studies, Daniel credits the placement year with helping him develop confidence, resilience, technical expertise, and career clarity.

For students considering a placement year, his advice is simple:

Say yes to as many opportunities as possible. You never know where they will take you.

For Daniel, the placement year provided the experience, confidence, and direction that launched his professional career.
