Design is a research strength at NTU that spans across our Schools and campuses. Design is interdisciplinary by its nature and incorporates the application of creativity, knowledge, methods and technologies.

The Design Research Group brings together experts in practice, theory, and history of design. Underpinned by principles of inclusivity and sustainability, we explore new approaches to design thinking, design enquiry and the use of design techniques and technologies to make positive impacts for individual, society, industry and the environment.

A particular focus of our research explores personalisation and sustainability. This includes for example the and the design and manufacture of bespoke and custom-fitting assisted living and medical devices.

Examples of our research include…

  • Exploring the role of personalisation in driving sustainable behaviours and the design of products and digital services.
  • Sustainable Design and the application of Circular Design strategies and life cycle analysis to reduce carbon emissions, reduce waste, enable repair, reuse and recycling.
  • Enhancing user-centred design, co-design and participatory design in the design of services, consumer products, rehabilitation, assistive technology and medical devices.
  • Exploring the application of cutting-edge 3D technologies such as 3D scanning motion capture, Computer-Aided Design, Virtual and Augmented Reality, robotics, Generative AI and 3D Printing in the design of games, immersive experiences, consumer products and medical devices.

Collaboration and knowledge exchange is at the heart of our research. Our group contributes significantly to research and practice within the School, across the University and other academic, industry and non-profit organisations nationally and internationally, and plays a key role in the development of Early Career Researchers at NTU.

Our researchers contribute to the breadth of collaborative design research and innovation across NTU.

Design Research across NTU

Design Matter provide contract research, innovation and consultancy to industry and external partners providing knowledge exchange pathways for the effective application of our research into societal, industrial and economic impact.

The Medical Engineering Design Research Group brings together a wide range of academics, clinicians, surgeons, healthcare companies and other medical professionals to explore new and innovative medical devices and services.

Our medical research, knowledge exchange and consultancy is done in collaboration with the Medical Technology Innovation Facility, which provides unique expertise, facilities and links with clinical partners and industry.

Product Innovation and Intelligent Design research conducts internationally leading research into the application of cutting-edge technologies to develop sustainable solutions for products and services.

Advanced Design And Manufacturing Engineering Centre conducts research in advanced engineering technologies and circularity with applications in sustainable buildings, production, consumption, society and circular economy
