Athletics

Athletics is a fun and inclusive sports club suitable for anyone and everyone! Whether you’re an established athlete or just fancy trying something different for the first time, there’s something for everyone and every ability with NTU Athletics.

Club introduction

We’re a large club with multiple groups; SPRINT, DISTANCE, FITNESS and FIELD. We take part in many competitions such as cross country, BUCS, half marathons and fun runs!

FITNESS

A great proportion of attendance in athletics has been through fitness in previous years so our committee aims to continue its success. There are excellent local provisions such as Parkrun which is a free to enter 5km run held every Saturday morning at 9:00am. Forest Rec Parkrun is a 10 minute walk from City Campus and the course loops twice around the recreation ground. For those living on Clifton Campus there is another event, Clifton Parkrun. These are a great gateway into running for beginners because you can run at your own pace and will often be surrounded by runners of similar ability.

DISTANCE AND SPRINT

During the early season, our distance athletes compete in local cross country and road events. We aim to work towards selection for BUCS XC that usually takes place in February. There is a healthy competitive environment among our runners that helps to make training exciting and fulfilling. There's always a brilliant atmosphere at these championships which boosts our athlete's performances, often leading to personal bests.

CHARITY WORK

Many of our members take part in road running events ranging from the 5k all the way up to the Marathon and they often choose to raise money for charity. This is brilliant for both causes because a clear goal can be set based on a fundraising figure or a personal time. Following the training recommended by Alex and the respective captain, these goals can be achieved.

President Welcome

Hello I am Cameron Cass, this year's President. I'm a final year student of BA French & Linguistics and I've been a member of NTU Athetics since 2017. Given that I'd already trained and experienced distance running prior to joining NTU, I was keen to continue my athletics journey. This was the best decision I made during the first year of university because I was warmly welcomed by the club and everyone was kind. The taster sessions provided a great insight into what to expect during the year and I was able to ask questions freely about training and races.

My favourite events by far are the BUCS events because there is a real sense of community with athletics, everyone supports each other which results in great performances. I ran my 800m personal best in the BUCS Indoor semi-final which was fulfilling for both me and the team. The afterparty is also an excellent night to socialise with your competitors and compatriots! There is no pressure to run specific times or to compete at a certain level, every member is treated equally and their personal achievements are collectively celebrated.

I couldn't recommend the club highly enough. If you would like to experience a social atmosphere whilst keeping fit, we're the one for you!

Coaching

This year, our captains are: Jake Woodman - Sprint, David Franco - Distance and Katie Style - Fitness.

We also provide circuit training sessions every Wednesday, led by committee members. This is a great way to stay healthy and social at the same time!

Tuesday 1st October : 6.30-8 : Tempo Taster – Meeting outside city SU  
Thursday 3rd October : 6.30-8 : Track Taster – Meeting outside city SU

Social Events

A large aspect of our club is based around socials and they're a brilliant way to get to know everyone in a relaxed setting. These include great club nights such as Ocean Wednesdays, a chance to dress up according to a theme each week and meet with other NTU Sports clubs. Plus, there are sober socials and day trips that allow all members a chance to meet new people. Our trusted social and well being officers are there to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable time and stays safe.
