Fencing

Fencing is fast paced, tactical sport that requires skills, precision and accuracy. It’s both an individual and team sport so can enjoy the best of both worlds. With many competitions throughout the year you will have the chance to apply the skills you have learnt by fighting other universities.

Club information

Fencing is a fast paced, tactical sport that requires skills, precision and accuracy. It is both an individual and team sport open for anyone to participate in. Everything you need to know to partake in the sport can be taught by our excellent coaches, so it's the perfect activity for a student wanting to try a new sport.

We focus on all three weapons, Foil, Epee and Sabre. The fencing club is open for training twice a week where all kit can be provided. If you are a more experienced fencer looking for a challenge, there are plenty of opportunities to compete and represent NTU in BUCS events.

We are a welcoming, close knit club, that looks forward to introducing new member to spa and socialise with.

President Welcome

Hi I'm Danielle the President of the Fencing Club at NTU. I have been fencing for 11 years and have been part of the NTU Fencing Team for 3. Some of my favourite memories at university have been with the people I have met from this club and I'm really looking forward to ensuring many more are made by our members. I was fortunate to be part of the team that won the BUCS Conference Cup in 2019 alongside 4 amazing women.

Through the tough times this year, the club has been amazing, organising weekly quizzes and online trainings which have been brilliant to be a part of.

Coaching

Chris Forbes: Foil Coach. Chris is a highly skilled foil coach who won the team bronze medal for Scotland in the Commonwealth Games.

Ev Van Gemeren: Sabre/ Epee coach. Ev has fenced for England over 5 times, winning gold each time.

Jenna Griffiths: foil coach. Jenna is president of East Midlands fencing and will be coaching the girls team this year.

British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS)

Fencing had an astounding year last year.

The women went unbeaten all season getting them both promotion and a gold medal in the cup.

The men had a similar season. After a tough few matches they also got promoted and got a silver medal in the cup.
We entered five fencers to the BUCS nationals (an independent competition), 3 of which came in the top 32. Including Danny, our team Epee Commonwealth Wealth gold medalist, who came 2nd.

Our beginners also won the first annual Lincoln Cup against rivals, University of Nottingham. This was a great chance for the new fencers to prove their abilities while also fencing others in a fun yet tough competition environment.
