Climbing and Mountaineering
At NTU Climbing and Mountaineering we're all about getting out there and experiencing the outdoors. Whether you've been climbing for years or are a total beginner, this is the club for you!
NTU Climbing attend the annual BUCS National event each year. Club members who wish to compete in BUCS are invited to participate in the team selection trials we host in October. Those selected for the team will gain access to additional coach-led training.
The Depot Climbing Centre host our annual Varsity event against University of Nottingham each year (pictured above), but we also host a number of friendly competitions with University of Nottingham throughout the year. We encourage all our members to take part in these competitions.
All club sessions are led by Single Pitch Award (SPA) trained committee members. They will teach you everything you need to know in order to ensure you can participate safely at whatever level you are comfortable with.
We regularly run outdoor trips to many different locations. These are great opportunities to escape the city for a day and experience the thrill of outdoor climbing, whilst surrounded by stunning countryside. There are also amazing, well-established trips to Wales, Fontainebleau, and The Alps. The year culminates with a two week trip to The Alps, giving you the chance to see exciting new scenery and undertake incredible climbing.
NTU Climbing is a very inclusive club with an active social life. There is something for everyone and all are great opportunities to get to know fellow club members.
Training times, venues and costs:
Monday: The club go to the Nottingham Climbing Centre from 7:00 pm until closing at 10:00 pm. Once you are signed up to the climbing centre (£3 lifetime membership) there is a discounted entry rate of £5 per session valid only on Monday evenings. Climbing equipment will be provided by the club.
Wednesday: The City site Students' Union building (SU) hosts a 10m climbing wall with routes ranging from easier 3+ grades for first timers, to harder 7a routes for more experienced climbers. The routes are changed every term. All routes are top roped with the opportunity for lead climbing. The SU wall will be open to all ability level members and for new climbers to be taught basic climbing techniques supervised by committee members. These sessions will run from 1pm – 4 pm weekly. This is the optimum time for new members to meet the club and learn how to climb. Climbing equipment will be provided.
Friday: The club meet at The Climbing Depot, which is an internationally recognised bouldering wall. We usually meet from 6 pm onwards. The Climbing Depot requires all members to join their own membership scheme and you will have to provide knowledge of basic bouldering safety. Membership is £5. Once a member, a session is £7.50 with a valid student card! We are also planning on reintroducing Ladies nights this year, and more information will be announced on our social media pages!
Outdoor Trips: We aim to run outdoor climbing trips as often as possible on Saturdays and Sundays, primarily to the Peak District. With longer climbing trips to North Wales, a week-long trip to Fontainebleau and a two week-long trip the Alps.
We also plan to introduce a women's session this year, more details to follow.
How to join
You can join the club for a fee of £80 at any point in the year (£50 sports affiliation fee with NTU sports and £30 subs), which also includes a new Climbing Head Coach who is very experienced to help us with anything throughout the year.
No specific kit is needed, as you progress within the club you will gradually buy your own climbing shoes, harness, and belay plate etc but everything is available to hire or borrow if you do not own it. The secretary will design and sell the club kit every year, which is available for every member to buy.
To visit either centre please watch their safety videos and complete the waiver.
