Climbing Club

At NTU Climbing and Mountaineering we're all about getting out there and experiencing the outdoors. If you're interested in any climbing discipline, then this is the club for you. Whether you've been climbing for years or you are a total beginner, this club provides for all. We even have our own climbing wall situated in the Students' Union building at the City Campus.

We regularly run outdoor trips to many different locations. These are great opportunities to escape the city for a day and experience the thrill of outdoor climbing, whilst surrounded by stunning countryside. There are also amazing, well-established trips to Wales, Fontainebleau, and The Alps. The year culminates with a trip to the Alps, giving you the chance to see exciting new scenery and undertake incredible climbing.

We compete in BUCS with great success. We also have been successful in our annual Bouldering Varsity against University of Nottingham, where Jacob Barrett came first place overall in the men's.

NTU Climbing is a very inclusive club with an active social life. There is something for everyone and all are great opportunities to get to know fellow club members.

President Welcome

Hi, I'm Nina and I'm the new President of the Climbing and Mountaineering club! I started climbing when I was about 15 and fell in love with the sport. I decided to join the club here at NTU which has really stoked my passion for the sport and has greatly expanded my knowledge of different climbing disciplines.

Among my favourite memories from the club was our two international trips, the first to Fontainebleau, France, at Easter and the second to Arco, Italy. The trips are always a lot of fun because you get to spend time with the friends you've made throughout the year in new and exciting places. If you decide to join the club, please come and say hi! You'll usually find me wearing a beanie.

Coaching and British Universities and College Sports (BUCs)

All club sessions are led by Single Pitch Award (SPA) trained committee members. They will teach you everything you need to know in order to ensure you can participate safely at whatever level you are comfortable with.

This year there will be an opportunity for more advanced coaching for club members who want to compete at BUCS as well as weekly training sessions by all of our committee members giving a great opportunity to improve both strength and technique.

Facilities

The City site Students' Union building (SU) hosts a 10m climbing wall with routes ranging from easier 3+ grades for first timers, to harder 7a routes for more experienced climbers. The routes are changed every term. All routes are top roped with the opportunity for lead climbing.

The club has an extensive amount of climbing equipment which can be used by club members during organised sessions (see session times below) and trips. If you would like to try out the NTU Sport wall outside of club sessions, climbing gear can be hired from the gym.

Practice / meeting schedule

Monday: The club go to the Nottingham Climbing Centre from 8:00 pm until closing at 10:00 pm. Once you are signed up to the climbing centre (£3 lifetime membership) there is a discounted entry rate of £4 per session valid only on Monday evenings. Climbing equipment will be provided by the club.

Wednesday: While the SU wall remains closed, we will be running alternating sessions at The Climbing Depot and the Nottingham Climbing centre each week. Please check our social media pages for more details

Friday: The club meet at The Climbing Depot, which is an internationally recognised bouldering wall. We usually meet from 6 pm onwards. The Climbing Depot requires all members to join their own membership scheme and you will have to provide knowledge of basic bouldering safety. This year the Depot is offering new students a discount for their first session between the 14th of September to the 30th of October which includes membership, shoe hire and entry for £5. Once a member, a session is £5!

Outdoor Trips: We aim to run outdoor climbing trips as often as possible on Saturdays and Sundays, primarily to the Peak District. With longer climbing trips to North Wales, a week-long trip to Fontainebleau and a two week-long trip the Alps.
