Fencing and Lacrosse win the Conference Cup! – BUCS Week 18

9 March 2023

2 weeks left until the season closes for BUCS Big Wednesday, so huge fixtures incoming for our teams in pink. We also hosted the Midlands conference cup finals at NTU, a regionalised knockout competition for teams competing in Tier 2 and below. There was plenty of NTU representation at the finals with 7 teams in pink.

Men's Lacrosse Players celebrate

Our Men’s Lacrosse 1st team, regular Championship finalists, had their semi-final away to Manchester Metropolitan University. NTU had already beaten them twice in the league campaign, but the away fixture had been a tight 2-goal winning margin. They were not going to take them lightly this time and put in a dominant performance winning 19-2 and advancing to the BUCS Big Wednesday and the National Championship final.

Also away in semi-final Championship action were the Men’s Table Tennis 1st team. For a team that have been regular finalists over the years, a tough trip to the University of Bristol awaited them, missing a key player. Following up a strong showing this year in the Individual Championships NTU’s no.1 seed led by example winning all games and giving NTU a close 10-6 win. The team makes BUCS Big Wednesday and the National Championship final.

At the Midlands Conference Cup finals, looking to emulate their 1st team’s success, the Men’s Lacrosse 2nd team faced off against the University of Birmingham’s 1st team for the title. Despite the snow and cold temperatures, the NTU team were red hot with their shooting skills and took the victory 11-8 to give us our 1st finals win of the day.

Inside and in much warmer conditions, the Men’s Fencing 1st team had made the final, looking to add to their Tier 2 league title. The opponents were the University of Oxford’s 2nd team, again opponents they have faced in the league. It was a hugely tight affair, with NTU losing 2 out of 3 weapons, but still they managed to come away with an overall score of 124 – 119 to win the title!

Still, in league action, our Golf Mixed 1st team had their final league match in Midlands tier 1. A victory would mean finishing in playoff places for promotion to the Premier tier, no NTU team has ever made it that high in the BUCS hierarchy. They faced Loughborough University’s 2nd team away in tough conditions, but luckily missed most of the snow. They once again put in a strong showing, winning 5-1 and securing that playoff spot. Well done team and good luck in the playoffs.

The final result of note belongs to our Women’s Rugby Union 2nd team. They have struggled in past seasons but have kept pushing and trying to improve. They faced an away trip to the Anglia Ruskin 1st team, so expectations were not high. However the girl’s perseverance finally paid off, putting in a fantastic performance, inspired by their 1st team’s excellent season. They came away with a narrow victory, with just 3 points between the sides. They won 22-25 and made the journey back to Clifton with spirits sky high! We’re so proud of you all.

Well done to all teams competing in tough conditions yesterday and the NTU Sport team for putting on a great Conference Cup final.
