Women’s Hockey 1sts seal their spot at BUCS Big Wednesday! – BUCS Week 19
16 March 2023
Yesterday was the penultimate Wednesday of the BUCS 22-23 season – a spare week left for rearranged fixtures ahead of the National Cup Finals next week. Nonetheless an exciting week of action with some teams securing league titles and promotions.

Our Women’s Hockey 1st team had to wait the extra week to play their Vase Semi-Final, but they held their nerve to achieve an impressive 6-0 win against Oxford 1st team. They are our 6th and final team to make it through to BUCS Big Wednesday next week!
A winning week for racquet sports. Our Women’s Badminton 1st team had their final league match against the University of Nottingham’s 4th team. They continued their winning streak to beat Nottingham 5-3, securing the league title meaning they will be promoted up to Tier 1 next year. Men’s Table Tennis 2nd team won 13-4 against Loughborough 2nd team in Tier 1. Our Women’s Tennis 1st team made the journey down to Norwich for a top of the league clash against East Anglia 1st team. NTU came out on top with a 4-2 win – there is one fixture left to play in this league so we’ll have to wait and see if they’ve done enough to win the title! On Tuesday our Men’s Squash 1st team also beat local rivals Nottingham 4th team 3-2.
Over to the Football where all 3 teams playing had huge wins against their opposition. Our women’s 2nd team have gone undefeated in the league this season, meaning they have won division 2A and will be promoted up to Tier 1 next year. In an extremely close game on Clifton Campus, our Men’s Rugby Union 4th team narrowly beat Warwick 2nd team 15-14. They now have a chance at winning division 3B next week in their final game against current leaders Moulton 1st team.
There was also lots of action at the weekend. Our Women’s Rugby Union 1st team were due to play Leicester in their final Tier 1 league game on Friday night, however, it was unable to be played and Leicester subsequently conceded the fixture, meaning NTU are Tier 1 league champions and will go through to the promotion playoffs! This is a huge achievement for the team as this is their first season in Tier 1 after they were promoted last year – demonstrating their hard work and dedication over the last 2 years. Gaelic Football made the trip up to Glasgow for their Championship tournament – a massive improvement on last year, making it to the semi-finals after playing 5 games in one day. Dodgeball Men’s 1st team had their final round-robin tournament at the sports centre, winning 2 / 2 fixtures to become Tier 1 league champions, which qualifies them into the National Trophy with a chance for promotion into National League. Finally, our Men’s Futsal 1st team played their Championship Quarter Final on Sunday night against Nottingham 1st team – always a fierce rivalry but NTU won 9-5, taking them through to the Semi-Finals this weekend against Bristol 1st team.
Best of luck to our 6 teams who are preparing for BUCS Big Wednesday next week, and also to our Canoe athletes competing down in Norwich this weekend for BUCS Canoe Sprint.
