NTU Sport Awards 2024

We are thrilled to announce the NTU Sport Awards for 2024. This prestigious event will recognise athletes, teams, committees and clubs for their achievements and contributions to sports at Nottingham Trent University. These awards see the combination of the NTU Sport Excellence Awards and Proud to be Pink awards (previously two separate events) to one, in-person award evening which will be held on Tuesday 7 May 2024.

Please note, meeting criteria for an award is not a guarantee that an award will be made. Awards will be decided based on the information provided in the nominations, against a given criteria and moderated by a panel, led by the Director of Sport. The Panel includes members of the sport management team and invited members of staff with key knowledge of specific parts of the NTU Sport programme. Nominations can be made by anyone, and you can nominate yourself if you wish. A nominee can also be put forward for multiple awards.

Award Categories:
This award will recognise two student-athletes (one male and one female) who have stood out from their peers, demonstrating exceptionally high performance and achievements. With a passion to develop and grow their sport, as an ambassador for NTU and the wider university.
Nominees must meet the below criteria:
- Have competed for NTU in BUCS activity in the academic year or an external equivalent (if available to them).
- To have competed at a National / International level away from their involvement with NTU.
- Achieved outstanding performance outcomes which have brought significant value to both themselves and the university.
- Have been an ambassador for NTU, contributing outside of competing to the success of the university sporting programs.
Nominees shortlisted for both Sports Man of the Year and Sports Woman of the year will be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
This award recognises a student volunteer who has stood out from their peers, demonstrating excellent organisation, a passion to develop sport, ability to inspire others and a conscientious approach to developing NTU Sport and our reputation.
The volunteer is not paid for their time and all activities considered must be extracurricular and not part of their course or studies.
Nominees must meet the below criteria:
- To have been active as a volunteer for the entire academic year prior to nomination and is still an active volunteer for NTU Sport.
- To have demonstrated a high level of commitment to make a significant impact to the university and the local community through their own effort.
- To have shown a commitment their personal development, teamwork and supporting the development of others.
Nominees shortlisted for Volunteer of the Year will be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
Awarded to a student-coach who shows commitment to delivering high quality club coaching sessions at any level and exhibits a collaborative approach to coaching which enhances club culture, membership and success.
Nominees must meet the below criteria:
- The coach has shown consistent time commitment in their coaching role throughout the academic year.
- The coach understands and demonstrates an athlete-centred philosophy.
- The coach shows commitment to their own personal development.
- The coach is committed to self-improvement and demonstrates the ability to learn from and share information with other coaches.
Nominees shortlisted for Student Coach of the Year will be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
Awarded to a club who have continually performed and excelled across all teams within the club over the course of the whole academic year.
Nominees must meet the below criteria:
- A club has consistently performed across all teams throughout the academic year.
- Across all teams, the club has achieved multiple successes (won national or league title/s or competition/s, achieved league promotion/s).
Sport Clubs shortlisted for this award will receive an invite for two members of the Club (for example President plus 1) to attend the NTU Sport Awards.
Awarded to one team within a club based on their performance over the academic year, with either broken records, an unbeaten season, consistent wins, or other such achievements.
Nominees must meet the below criteria:
- Have competed or performed for NTU during this academic year (BUCS and non-BUCS sports).
- Have consistently performed to a high standard over the course of the year, with multiple successes (e.g. won majority of league or competition/matches, won a national or league title, achieved league promotion).
- Consistently competed within finals BUCS/non-BUCS competition at the highest level possible.
Sport Teams shortlisted for this award will receive an invite for two members of the team (e.g. Captain and Vice-Captain) to attend the NTU Sport Awards.
This award will be awarded to a committee who have demonstrated exceptional improvements in their club over the academic year and have worked hard to improve their member experience, organise impactful charitable events and shown a dedication to achieve goals they set out for themselves at the beginning of the year.
Nominees must include examples of the below criteria and other relevant examples:
- Clear examples of improved membership numbers.
- Clear examples of planning charity/fundraising events throughout the year (Movember, working with local charities, volunteering with community organisations/businesses).
- Clear examples of how they have worked to improve the equality, diversity, and inclusion of their club.
- Clear examples of how the club has aimed to improve their sustainability e.g. online processes rather than paper, shared coaches, any social media coverage regarding sustainability.
- Examples that show how they have achieved the goals set within their club development plan.
Committees shortlisted for this award, will receive an invite for two committee members (For example, President and Secretary) to be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
Awarded to students whose performances have contributed most significantly to the success of the club & department during their time at university. Nominees must meet a minimum of 2 of the below Full Colours criteria and at least 1 of the criteria for Half Colours. (This applies only to sports with a Sport England recognised National Governing Body.) Athletes must be in their final year of study at NTU and:
- To have had international selection and/or representation (full or one level below e.g. U21’s) within the current academic year. This includes qualification/selection for and/or attendance of major games, championships, and tours/circuits.
- To be a regular starting player within a professional club or franchise for at least one season and within the current academic year.
- To have represented NTU for at least two academic years, as a regular in the first team (or individual sporting equivalent).
- To have consistently achieved the highest levels of sporting performance whilst part of the NTU Sport programme.
All those who complete an application & are allocated the award will be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
Awarded to students whose performances have contributed most significantly to the success of the club during their time at the university. Nominees must meet a minimum of 2 of the below criteria. (This applies only to sports with a Sport England recognised National Governing Body and where the sport is an Olympic sport, the athlete must compete in the Olympic discipline – i.e. WTF Taekwondo). Athletes must be in their final year of study at NTU and:
- To have been part of a squad that competed in a BUCS Championship final, OR, have won a medal of any colour in a BUCS individual event. (This applies only to BUCS medals that carry BUCS points).
- To be a squad member for a professional club or franchise within the current academic year.
- To have been part of a team that has gained promotion into the highest level of BUCS competition available in their sport (e.g. BUCS Premiership or National League).
- To have been/currently be a part of a recognised performance/talent pathway.
All those we complete an application & are allocated the award will be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
Awarded to students who have contributed most significantly to the success of their club during their time at university. Going above and beyond the call of duty. Nominees must meet point 1 of the criteria as well as a minimum of 2 others:
Students must be in their final year of study at NTU and:
- To have demonstrated behaviours in line with the Pride, Unity and Respect values of NTU Sport.
- To be a member of their club committee, completing at least one academic year in post. (This includes committee positions specific to a club’s operation).
- To have made an exceptional contribution to their club, for at least 2 academic years. (This can include club captaincy).
- To be instrumental in the day to day running of their club.
To have contributed highly to their club’s development, as part of the wider NTU Sport programme.
All those who complete an application & are allocated the award will be invited to the NTU Sport Awards.
Leaving Scholars:
Additionally, we will be recognising all of our leaving scholars. All scholars in their final year at NTU will receive in invite the NTU Sport Awards to thank them for their time and contribution to NTU Sport.
(Athletes do not need to complete a nomination form for this award and will receive an invite automatically. Please do complete a nomination form for any other awards yourself or the leaving scholar wish to be considered for).
