This week in BUCS 23/24 - BUCS Big Wednesday
21 March 2024
This is your weekly update on all things BUCS for NTU Sport. Here you'll find commentary on our highlighted games, along with a full breakdown of the most recent results for all of our BUCS teams.

This week saw the culmination of a season filled with ups, downs, excitement and tension for many of our BUCS teams. After some incredible semi-final games, NTU went into the day with four teams competing at BUCS Big Wednesday, hosted at Loughborough University, an event all BUCS teams strive towards.
American football
The first fixture took place on Tuesday of this week, with our NTU American Football team taking on Exeter in the Trophy final. The Renegades got off to a flying start as they took a 14-point lead. However, Exeter went on to score 36 points unanswered which proved too big of a gap for the team in pink, who managed to pull the score back to 27-36 in the final quarter but resulted in Exeter ultimately winning the Trophy. Despite this, the Renegades have had an amazing season, going unbeaten in the league, securing promotion to the Premier division for the 24/25 season.
Table Tennis Men’s 1st team
This was NTU’s 4th consecutive National Championship final, all 4 finals have been NTU v UoN. UoN are a very tough opponent but both teams dominate Men's Table Tennis nationally, being 1st and 2nd in Prem North respectively. It's an incredibly high standard and our team played outstandingly well, with NTU Player Josh Bruce getting player of the match.
Hockey Women’s 1st team
Also their 4th consecutive Vase final, the NTU team are reigning champions from 21-22 and 22-23. The team faced Newcastle, National League adversaries of the team in pink. It was a very tight game, with neither team able to break the other down for most of the match. It was 0-0 all the way until the final minutes, when Newcastle snuck in a goal late in the last quarter. This meant the NTU team concede the Vase title for the first time in 2 seasons.
Lacrosse Men’s 1st team
The final game of BUCS Big Wednesday 2024 saw NTU take on UoN in what was set to be a thrilling conclusion to an amazing season for the Men’s Lacrosse 1st team. NTU got off to a rocky start, going 3-0 down inside the first few minutes. NTU then found their feet and started to score themselves, ultimately entering the final quarter at 6-6 with it all to play for. A tense final 15 minutes saw NTU dominate, scoring 2 goals to claim the National Championship for a second season in a row with a final score of 6-8 to NTU! This cements the Lacrosse Men’s 1st team place as the best HE Lacrosse team in the country, a huge achievement and something everyone associated with the team can be incredibly proud of.
We couldn’t be any prouder of every student who competed both on the day and throughout the season. Each one of you have made us #ProudtobePink!
With this, a lot of competitive sport has come to an end. However, there are still BUCS points to play for! Women's Football and Men's Tennis have their promotion playoff games starting next week, and the cricket season will be starting on 24 April. There are also various individual events on the weekends across many different sports.
