Richard Malcolm is a Lecturer in Product Design within the School of Architecture Design & The Built Environment, teaching across both BA and BSc Product Design courses. Primary responsibilities include, BA final year course tutor & supervisor, and Level 1 design sketching tutor.

Career overview

Prior to joining Nottingham Trent University in November 2019, Richard spent over 12 years as a product designer and design manager, working in a number of industries, including hearing aids & headphones (ExSilent, Amsterdam), power tools (Chervon Europe and Evolution Power Tools), and pneumatics (PCL).

During this time, he worked with well-known brands around the world and was involved in projects for airlines & aircraft maintenance companies, garage & automotive companies and the UK fire service. Experience was also developed in a range of manufacturing processes and product testing with regular travel to Europe and China working alongside customers and manufacturers.

As a result, Richard looks to align teaching with his experience, and has a keen interest in seeing students develop into highly creative designers ready to take on the challenges of industry.
