Lecturer, Product Design
Richard Malcolm is a Lecturer in Product Design within the School of Architecture Design & The Built Environment, teaching across both BA and BSc Product Design courses. Primary responsibilities include, BSc Final Year tutor & supervisor, BSc Year 1 module & project leader, and BA Year 1 design communication leader. He is also the Schools and Colleges Liaison Lead for the Product Design Department, coordinating outreach work with teachers and pupils in the Nottingham area and, more recently, across other parts of the country.
Career overview
Prior to joining Nottingham Trent University in November 2019, Richard spent over 12 years as a product designer and design manager, working in a number of industries, including hearing aids & headphones (ExSilent, Amsterdam), power tools (Chervon Europe and Evolution Power Tools), and pneumatics (PCL).
During this time, he worked with well-known brands around the world and was involved in projects for airlines & aircraft maintenance companies, garage & automotive companies and the UK fire service. Experience was also developed in a range of manufacturing processes and product testing with regular travel to Europe and China working alongside customers and manufacturers.
As a result, Richard looks to align teaching with his experience, and has a keen interest in seeing students develop into highly creative designers ready to take on the challenges of industry.
