Role
Simon Johnson is a Technical Specialist within Nottingham School of Art & Design, providing technical instruction in Stoll M1 Plus and Shima Apex 4 programming, with particular expertise in knitwear design, virtual sampling and digital product development. He delivers training on the operation, application and maintenance of Stoll and Shima industrial knitting machines, ensuring students gain experience with industry-standard technologies.
Working closely with academic staff and students, Simon supports the development of knitted samples and garments for student collections, exhibitions and degree shows. Alongside a colleague, he helps translate creative concepts into technical outcomes through specialist knitwear production techniques.
Simon is responsible for the maintenance, management and operation of all CAD systems and knitting machinery within the department. He also oversees health and safety compliance across knitwear facilities, ensuring equipment, working practices and learning environments meet the highest standards for staff and students.

Simon Johnson is a Knitwear Technical Specialist with more than 33 years of experience in the knitwear and textile industry. He began his career as a Junior Technician at Jaeger Knitwear, completing an Advanced Knitwear Mechanics Apprenticeship in 1996 and gaining additional industry experience with Charnos Knitwear.
Since joining Nottingham Trent University, Simon has progressed from Technician to Technical Specialist, supporting teaching, technical training and the management of specialist knitwear facilities. His expertise spans Stoll and Shima knitting technologies, machine maintenance, CAD programming, virtual sampling and knitwear product development.
He has completed extensive manufacturer training in Stoll and Shima mechanical systems and programming, alongside City & Guilds qualifications in hardware, software, electronics and engineering. Combining significant industry experience with specialist technical knowledge, Simon plays a key role in supporting high-quality knitwear education and maintaining industry-standard facilities for students and staff.
