Hello! My name is Eun-Gyeol Park, and I am from South Korea. Before coming to the UK, I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Art at Sungkyunkwan University, majoring in Theatre Directing. I then worked as a performance director and show producer, including directing immersive shows at a major theme park in Korea. Currently, I am expanding my creative abilities by pursuing an MA in Event Management at Nottingham Trent University, combining my artistic directing background with strategic event planning.

How did you find out about NTU and what made you choose our University?

To be completely honest, I was fortunate enough to receive admission offers from four different universities in the UK, including NTU. What ultimately made me choose NTU was a combination of two things: the generous scholarship support the university offered, and the exceptional kindness of Dave Berry from the International Development Office. Throughout the admissions process, Dave was incredibly helpful, attentive, and guiding, which made me feel deeply welcomed even before arriving. After careful consideration, I knew that a university with such a supportive environment was where I wanted to pursue my Master's degree.

You were successful in achieving a scholarship – congratulations! How did you feel when you found out you had received the award?

I was absolutely thrilled and deeply honoured when I received the news. This scholarship felt like a significant acknowledgment of my previous work as a director and my potential as a future global event manager. It greatly simplified my financial move to the UK and inspired me to become even more involved in the academic life at NTU.

Now some questions about your course – what has been your favourite part of it, and what has been the most challenging aspect?

My favorite part has been the collaborative, industry-focused projects. For example, analysing real-world cultural event strategies and incorporating diverse creative elements like K-Pop marketing and immersive storytelling into events was particularly rewarding. The biggest challenge was adapting to a new academic style and technical English terminology, especially while also dealing with unexpected personal health issues this year. However, the incredible support from my course leaders and tutors, particularly Andy and Libby from MA Event Management, helped me transform these challenges into valuable personal growth.

What has been the most important thing you have learned or experienced on your course, and how will you use the skills you’ve gained, in your future career?

The most important skill I've developed is a structured, strategic approach to event management, learning to balance creative ideas with budget, operations, and risk management. I intend to apply these skills to create immersive, IP-based performances and theme park entertainment with global appeal, smoothly integrating my background in directing with professional event execution.

Speaking of the future, what are your hopes and aspirations, now that you are coming to the end of studies? What is your next chapter?

Starting this June, I'll be continuing my research project remotely from South Korea, focusing on how visitors experience entertainment. Ultimately, I aim to become a global show producer, creating engaging events that bring people together through storytelling. I also share my experiences and thoughts on my YouTube channel, hoping to inspire other creative individuals.

Students from Korea are often more familiar with larger UK cities, but what can you tell them about life in Nottingham? Have you enjoyed living here?

I've really loved my time living in Nottingham! Many Korean students automatically think of London, but Nottingham is a fantastic, lesser-known option, especially for creative individuals. It's a lively, safe, and historic city perfect for students, boasting a thriving arts scene. Getting around is incredibly easy, and the city has a special warmth that quickly makes you feel at home. It offers the ideal mix of engaging cultural experiences and a good environment for focusing on studies.

What will you miss most about NTU?

I will definitely miss the vibrant energy of the campus, the face-to-face networking events, and the inspiring, open-door discussions with my lecturers, who always treated my creative ideas with immense respect and guidance.

Finally, is there anything else you would like to share with our future students? Any words of advice?

My advice to future international students is: don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, and take all the support the university offers! Whether it is academic advice, help with visa or personal support during the health issues or challenging moments. NTU has a wonderful safety net. Believe in your unique background - your distinct cultural perspective is your greatest strength here.
