NTU students studying BSc (Hons) Product Design were invited to the Starpack Students Competition awards ceremony on Wednesday 19 June 2024 where they picked up twenty nine awards which included three Sponsor Award Winners, one Runner Up Sponsor Award, seven Gold Awards, six  Silver Awards, nine Bronze Awards and three Highly Commended Awards. NTU was also awarded the Eric Dickens Memorial Award for a third consecutive year.

Established in 1964, Starpack Students is a competition run by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3), for learners aged 18+ which challenges students to design solutions to problems set by brand leading FMCG companies, design agencies and manufacturers, and win recognition of their excellence.

Work is judged on several key criteria including originality and aesthetic qualities of the design, with consideration to commercial viability; how the packaging delivers benefits to consumers with functionality considered as much as the branding; and demonstrating an awareness of environmental issues, through economic use of the material and recyclability.

William Stenning was also awarded a £100 cash runner up prize for Brief C: Metal Pack for a Luxury Fragrance (Sponsored by The Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association).

The ceremony was capped off once again by NTU winning the Eric Dickens Memorial Award for the third consecutive year. This award recognises the most successful institution in the competition and is awarded to a college or university in recognition of its success and acknowledging that this is indicative of the high quality of packaging design evident at the college/university. We are therefore thrilled to bring it back to NTU for a third time.

Dr Luke Siena, Senior Lecturer in Product Design, who led the students through the competition submissions said:

“Once again we are thrilled by our student’s success within the Starpack Students competition. Their dedication to learning about the packaging sector and their attention to detail in their packaging projects was evident and rewarded by the judges. The whole product design staff team is thrilled by the students’ success, as they collected a number of the coveted sponsor awards as well as a large number of bronze, silver and gold awards”.

“This achievement reflects the time, effort, and hard work invested by our student when preparing their entries. Additionally, the sponsor awardees and gold, silver, and bronze awardees are now eligible to participate in the WorldStar Student Awards Competition 2024/25, a global packaging design competition for students and we look forward to supporting all students with their entries in the hope of achieving further success later in the year”.

To continue to build on several years of success within the competition is simply superb. Many congratulations to all who took part.”
